1st gen replacement speaker issues

Hey all,

My truck: 2002 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off-Road, 4-door. (Black)

I replaced my factory head unit and dropped in a Pioneer AVH-X4800BS. I’m pleased with the unit so far.

I also replaced all 4 door speakers and door tweeters (with built in crossovers). The door speakers in all 4 doors that I used are JBL Stage 8602 (5x7 2-way).

I popped my door panels back on and I cannot turn any bass on at all without those speakers making a sound like a busted/distorted/crackling speaker. Any ideas on this? I know they’re not blown.

Could they be hitting the factory grills on the door?? Any input is appreciated. Thanks all!

Could it be the doors rattling that makes you think it's the speakers? Maybe pull the panels again & have a listen?

Do consider that you're giving these speakers up to roughly 1/4 of their rated power. They're not going to get that loud on head unit power before distortion starts to become a problem - particularly on the low end.

 

I checked the doors. I put all new plastic retainers in the door panel too, so they are good to go.

I’m not trying to be bumping to any music or anything. Just regular music cause them to crackle at a reasonable, normal volume.

 

Those plastic clips don't keep your doors from rattling. Most door noise, at least in my truck, came from the interaction between the door card and the inner door skin. There's other stuff that makes noise in there too, but that was the big thing for me.

But since you're calling it crackling at low volume, that either sounds like a blown speaker(s) or bad wiring somewhere. But if both are doing it at the same time and same level they're either both trashed or you're asking more of them than they can handle.
