Going to Moab next spring... Debating RTT vs Expo trailer.

If you want to set up a base camp that you will return to day after day I think a trailer is the way to go. However, if you plan to be in a different place every night, then I like the RTT. Pulling a trailer can limit where you want to go a lot more than an RTT will, but setting up the RTT every night in the same camp is little annoying... o_O

A friend owns a large RV dealership. He's about to pick up a line of expo trailers. At one point, I thought he would have them by the fall Black Mountain trip. Looks more like December before they are here. He's offeredd the use of one for Moab. The 2 couples we'll be going with do a Moab trip every year. They have a route planned for next year that they have done in nearly stock full size trucks. One pulled a trailer behind a short bed F150 last year. He'll be doing the same next spring. Thinking it won't be impossible for me to do the same. We'll spent a couple nights at Ft Sill on our way out. If i use the trailer, I won't need to buy a tent of my own. Sort of a quandry as to which way to go at this time.

These expos are the original series. I think they were on Johns first Tacoma when he bought it, so don't think he wanted them as much as he got them. And John doesn't carry anything in his truck on a daily basis, the ride was a bit rough. For all that you carry the expos would be a good investment; however, if you take everything out between trips you can expect your ride quality to suffer. Given all you carry, (and you carry more than I do, which is saying somethingo_O) I would suggest getting 1/4" aluminum plates verse the steel. I have aluminum plates. They are a bit scratched up, but they do the job intended. Unless you drive through rockgardens on a regular basis, the weight saved between aluminum and steel make them worth the extra cost (and you don't have to powder coat them). I'll get a pic of the expos on my truck so you can see the arch. I leave most of my stuff in the truck between trips, I usually only take out the cooking grill and tripod, kitchen box, fridge, and clothes. Maybe 175 lbs, +/- with more or less cast iron cookware I bring.

Good to know about your aluminum skids. I'm even going so far as to get an aluminum plate bumper. The old racer in me believes in shedding weight not adding it. I travel light most of the time. I'm looking at the AllPro light leaf packs too. At this point oem leaves and AAL is still doing everything I need. I'll be looking at what all will be going to Moab with me though....

I'm lucky haven't had to do one yet. My last SUV that I just had to replace unexpectedly had a small top in the cv boot but the bearings never started making any noise. I decided I would replace when it did but in 5 years no problems. Unfortunately the engine shit the bed on me lol.

Truck looks great. Seems like you had came up with a good plan/goals for what you wanted to do with it and are making it happen. Keep up the good work.

I had a persistent whining sound coming from the front of my truck for some time. In December I started having another rotational noise coming from the front of the truck. ON A WHIM I decided to swap/upgrade my diffs to see if the noise would go away. So I ordered new 4.56 gears from ECGS with an ARB AirLocker in the front. With a lot of help from some good TW friends @Mr.Bl0nde & @tacotim448 , I got the new gears installed. Unfortunately, I didn't get pics of the whole process, but here are a few.

Success was achieved in eliminating the original whining noise replacing the diffs. However, the other rotational noise remained. After poking around the front of the truck I finally figured out the rotational noise was caused by a bad drivers side hub assembly.

I also picked up a BedSlide in a group-buy a few months ago. I finally got it installed a couple weeks ago. Between the Bedslide and the folding tailgate steps I got for Christmas. It's going to be a lot easier to get things in and out of the bed.
