Mine balanced when they first got put on. Because the idiots double stacked weights. Since then, never

 

I used half ounce weights rather than the standard 1/4 ounce. i think it worked well. But they're mud tires..... they aren't going to truly balance.

I like what I've seen from the KM2 in person.

When I'm ready for tires, I'll be more conservative and get 265 size. Weight and price will be the deciding factors, because 4 banger.

 

285's or better.

With mud tires, keep 'em rotated if you want them to STAY round. Make sure you have good alignment #'s.

 

Looking at it from a weight/fuel/wear n tear on components aspect.
After reading the latest in Carter's thread, really got me thinking about the affect and effect conundrum.

Bigger tars = more weight = more stress = more fuel = more girz = more money = money pit

Also, don't stay with "standard" front to rear/rear to front same side radial tire balance....Every 3rd rotation, I swap fronts to opposite side of rear. They wear much more consistently that way. Once they are out of balance or out of round, too late....Gotta stay one step ahead of the odd wear.

 

It's common practice to cross the front or rear tires. Only in rotational tread tires do they not cross from driver to passenger side and vice versa.

It was NOT a commonly accepted rotation for radial ply tires until just very recently. Manufacturers still recommend F to R & rear to front ON SAME SIDE for radial tires unless unusual wear patterns begin to show up. Most vehicle manufacturers show same side rotation in owners manuals. Crossing is/was normal with bias ply tires.

Rears cross to front on 4wd. Fronts cross to rear on AWD.

And I think you meant DIRECTIONAL tread tires.

 

Compare weights with the 255/85 options. I think you'll find the very minor weight increase is worth the big jump in clearance. For me personally, 265s haven't cut it. Almost every time i've gotten stuck it was from high centering on the axles. And I've had to do a lot of bouncing over things. 255 seems like the perfect compromise between weight and height

 

Are the 255s actually lighter than the 285s? I thought due to the high sidewall of the 255s they usually weighed more.

 

Directional and rotational are similar enough. Yes, meant directional.

I know you've been driving WAAAAAAAAY longer than me. But I've never not crossed tires on a rotation in my 15 years of driving/maintaining a vehicle, unless it had directional tread tires.

 

Km2 is 5lbs lighter in the 255. But it varies by brand and tire of course
