No offence, but is this whole ‘TRD’ thing stupid?

The weirdest is the second gen and the “V6 SR5” decals with the Toyota Racing Division stickers on the side box bed. Why doesn’t the third gen have em? It just has the “V6” decal.

no, I wanted a reasonably competent offroad truck stock that I could take on fire roads and such with a reasonable level of competence and without my wife freaking out, yet is still comfortable on long highway trips.. sure, the under armor is weak compared with the hard core stuff, but its sure a lot better than nothing. my gen2 trd offroad access cab delivers this in spades.

It's pretty obvious that the street TRD version is a DIRECT result of racing efforts. One look at the headlight (stickers) will tell you these are identical trucks:

I think the question is, why does Toyota charge so much for TRD stickers?

I do sport model which is above an SR-5. The TRD to me is crap more accessories push button start extra switches to do things ya don’t need for the offroad. With the sport and bilstein shocks good set of treaded tires it all ya need to hit that remote camping spot.

Simple, because they can...just plain economics. Marketing 101: Branding, create tiers, exclusivity and scarcity. Benz has their AMG, BMW has the "M" & ALPINA...the list goes on and on. As long as people are willing to pay for a "specially branded" product at a premium they'll continue to make it.

looking at the 2018 Tacoma brochure. ignoring purely cosmetic BS, compared to the SR5, the TRD Sport has 17" alloys, 120V 400W onboard inverter, it has the dual zone climate control (my wife would like that), heated seats, auto headlights. the DC version has a moon roof. The TRD OR adds the softer offroad suspension with billsteins, electronic rear differential lock, terrain select and crawl control (or A*TRAC if its a stick), and goes back to 16" wheels w A/T tires

I'm not even going to bother comparing the bullet lists of the Limited or TRD Pro, they only come in DC, which I wouldn't buy anyways, the bed is too short.

whoa, when did they do away with the 'Prerunner' ?

Lol what? Sport as in TRD Sport?

I’m guessing you never gone thru deep mud or dunes before? If you know how crawl control works, then it’s a no brainer to use it in those situations if you don’t plan to spend thousands on lift kit, transmission, and if deep mudding; power.

Normally you would have to highly modify the truck thru some stuff, but if you use crawl control right, you can go thru it without the added cost.

Basically crawl control has sensors on each wheel and individually gives certain amount of power to each wheel to reduce spin. It’s not like putting full lockers on and stomping on the gas to either get out of the hole but potentially getting even more stuck. It’s pretty common near my area since it’s mostly swamp areas and big mud pits. Or at the dunes when your truck sinks in soft sand.

But hey, different people goes to different camp sites/places. I like to go where no one goes and tow trucks won’t make it thru. Don’t like taking the time to get stuck and winch my way out when the only way is to go forward when you know for sure you’ll get stuck.
