yes... i know for a fact people will pay more for a product that was ~1/5 the amount of the same product because of convenience




20 oz coke are typically more, sometimes upto 2 times more than a 2 liter coke

 

And you consider tire sleeves a convenience? Most would consider just driving on the tires they have on much much more convenient.

 

I'm considering it more so than keeping/buying an extra set of wheels and tires

 

But keeping or buying an extra set isn't a requirement it's a luxury.

as is almost everything that everyone buys every single day.
alcohol, cable, internet, cell phone, cars, (heck, I bet over half of people's grocery shopping could be classified as luxury) etc

 

You aren't arguing FOR your point. Most people have little to no interest in tires. To get them interested in your product you have to provide savings, or something really appealing. This is assuming you can get the product to even work. Cost per mile your idea is more expensive than just buying tires though.

 

aforementioned coke conundrum and people may not be interested in tires but that doesn't keep them from having to buy them (unless they just buy a new car when the oems wear out), and those who benefit from having 2 sets of tires (even though one of those sets see way less mileage like winter tire which may dry rot before all the tread is used) could/would benefit something like this

 

As an engineer, albeit not one who designs this type of product, I'm telling you the assumed cost analysis and pro vs con makes the product not worth pursuing. I would venture to say this is why something of the sort doesn't exist already.

 

I mean what do you know? you haven't even built a single prototype...


the latter part of your post is very true but could also be applied across the spectrum and if everyone had that mind set, nothing would ever advance in any field.

From another labeled "engineer" that this has nothing to do with, this statement right here is really what it boils down to.

If you think it's a great idea and wonder why no one has come up with it there is more than likely a legit reason reason why not.

 

That's not true for all cases. A lot of products that have been successful either were projected to save money, or had a lot of benefits that made the cost worth it. Your proposal so far does neither.

 

but the same question could have been applied "why has no one else thought of this" and that was more of the point I was trying to make.

 

Oh, gotcha. Yeah that question isn't always the case...but the answer to it seems pretty clear for your idea...no cost savings, no real mind blowing benefit.

 

why in the world, with the minds that are present for most of the day in this thread alone, can we not come up with something that cost almost nothing to make, requires almost no effort to do, is sought after by almost everyone, and can be sold for a crap load of money?

 

Now this is worth pursuing hahahaha. Why didn't we think of fidget spinners?
