NEW TSB, Whine Noise From Rear of Vehicle

looks like i'll be doing a bunch of leaf springs again.
i wonder if my parts manager will order the OR springs for my sport.

Yeah but it was only a image of the 1st page. You actually provided the entire TSB.

Looks like no new springs for us DCLB.

 

Doesn't include the sr5's,

 

Nor access cabs and any 2018's. I am hoping this is just the first wave of the TSB. I imagine they wouldn't want to recall every model at once. Start with the most popular models and move on down the list.

What is a TSB? Is it a mandatory recall?

You have to take your truck in and prove you have the problem, basically.

If you don't do it before your warranty is up, or the dealer can't reproduce the symptom.. well ur facked.

 

Wait so let me get this straight. They have a new fix for it now that just released?

 

Fix might be the wrong term, but if it deadens the whine and nothing grenades down the road.. all good. It's for specific trucks though..

 

Do you know why its only for specific models and not sr, sr5's, etc?

 

"Some 2016 – 2017 model year Tacoma Double Cab 4WD vehicles equipped with a BD22 rear differential may exhibit a whine type noise from the rear of the vehicle. This condition may occur while driving around 50 mph at constant speed, slight acceleration, or slight deceleration and may be caused by rear differential vibration transferring through the chassis and body. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition."

What all the horseshit in that document boils down to is this:

That BD22 axle I believe is the 8.75" rear diff found in ORs (ALL), PROs (ALL), and also M/T trucks that are not OR/PRO. You cannot get an SR5 in M/T, but the SR you can (not the '18 though).

 

It's only for double cab with 8.75 rear end. The "all other except TRD pro, manual transmission" is where the sport, sr, and sr5 comes in. Those in manual transmission have the 8.75" rear end. OR and Pro automatics have 8.75" rearend, all other automatics have the smaller 8".

 

Mine doesn't do this frequently but when it does it does drive my OCD bonkers and of course haven't been able to produce at the dealership... Hopefully I'll be able to reproduce it for the dealer in the next 10k miles so I can get this done for free vs. it becoming a more frequent problem later I have to either pay to get fixed or live with.

 

What’s a Dynamic Damper?

 

Something that helps mask/deaden/block the whine I guess. They're treating the symptom and not the cause IMO..

 

Maybe I’m missing something here, but what do the leaf springs have to do with the diff whine? It’s like replacing engine mounts to fix a cylinder knock.

 

But the SR Manual would have only been in Access Cab Configuration

 

The leaf springs are the component that is conducting the resonance. Any time you have rotating gearing there is going to be noise and vibration. In this case other components are amplifying the slight sound.
