23k miles on my 16. Driven the Alaskin highway and had two huge rocks slam into my windshield from oncoming traffic on the washed out roads. No damage. Guess people have bad luck

22k between my two 3rd gens and not even a chip. Drive gravel road all the time.

Sounds more like unbelievably bad luck.

Definitely don’t use safelite, I made that mistake when I broke my rear window. The amount of damage they caused to my truck was unbelievable (truck was 8 months old with 30k miles).

It spent 10 days in the shop as a result. I will say they stood behind it and gave me no hassle paying to fix their mistake (10x what the window replacement cost in damage done).

So just to reiterate, no safelite ever.

My truck has 15k on it. My 3rd tacoma. I also used to drive a 3500hd on construction sites daily.

My truck looks like the lunar landing site from pitting. My 160k tacoma didn't look this bad. My work truck that follows dump trucks all day doesn't look this bad. My life style hasn't changed and I actually drive roads that impact the windshield less now.

Just junk. The rep at Toyota told me the pitting was my fault due to driving my truck. I flat out asked him if I shouldn't take the truck camping if the windshield is so fragile. Don't think he was ready for the push back.

I work 3rd shift. 11:45pm commute into work. Where are my rocks coming from?

Just really poor quality glass. I'm extremely disappointed in Toyota for this. I'm a welder and in the morning after welding all night, the sun messes with my eyes enough as it is. Then to look through a screen door to see the road sucks.

    Pitiful, just pitiful... :)

I noticed the same with mine- a few trips on dirt, and a mild windstorm with blowing dust. My 1st gen had it worse but looked so much better

I was going to comment that in my 26 years of driving, I've only had to replace 2 windshields. One was on my first Tacoma, a 1995. I was driving down a street and a big truck in front of me ran over something that looked like a curved brake shoe, maybe 4" in length. I remember seeing that sumbich fly up in front of me and sail about 2" above my hood right into my windshield, cracking the shit out of it.

Last windshield I replaced was in my previous vehicle, a Chevy Volt. Likely happened driving the short dirt/gravel road to the field I usually fly from. I ended up following one of my instructors and I guess his truck kicked up a rock. Little chip...a couple hours later, 12" crack.

I hope I don't ever have to replace any glass again.. but chances are it's not unlikely to happen.

Yes it is YOUR choice witch company installs your windshield, its like choosing the witch body shop does your collision repair. As far as acoustic goes it is a little thicker inner layer to cut down on road noise not meant to be stronger.
Windshields are made of 3 layers....

PPG is no longer, ( Pittsburgh Paint and Glass ) sold thier glass division to an over seas company so its now PGW ( Pittsburgh Glass Warehouse ).
Its still made here in the U.S.A. for now but rumor has it thier last glass plant will be shutting down sometime this year.

Taco was the first that' ever chipped. It was on the highway. I've had similiar hits and maybe had some pitting but no ding like this. I was surprised. The noise of the impact did not suggest it would crack based on anecdotal experience of other chips hitting. the tar bit was still stuck in the windshield and I was surprised that it was a piece of tar chip which I've been hit with many times. Go figure.

Luckily, I was able to drill out the hole and use a compound to fix it since it didn't spider. But, I was surprised at what little it took to crack it.

Go figure. I just trail behind other cars a bit more if it looks like there's construction debris or the roads been graveled. Probably safer driving anyway.
