Haven't really seen a thread on undercoating. I'm new to trucks, this being my first, bought it new and want to keep it hopefully for a long time. Was curious what, if anything, do you guys use or recommend to keep them from rusting.
    Thanks

Fluid film. Pretty cheap, easy to do yourself and works great.

    Oh, and welcome!

Awesome. Looked at that attached thread, looks promising. I'm in Ohio and we get a fuck ton of salt and deicer thrown at the roads.
    Thanks for the help fellas

I tried some different stuff similar to Fluid Film in the past but could not stand the strong smell, I bought Cavity Wax and sprayed the Frame and underside of my 17, even I have to do it every year that is fine because there was no smell.

Yup fluid film works well, it smells though when it burns off the exhaust. You can get a kit to properly spray it or just use the can with the wand. Depends on how much coverage you want to do.

Problem with rubber undercoatings is when they cure and when the crack it’s not an if, you will never see the corrosion starting. Until it is to late.

Bought 3 cans to start. Gonna go light and get as much of the underbody as possible. Hopefully it don't smell as bad as people are saying it will lol

It’s not THAT bad. It dissipates after a couple of days. Wear old ratty clothes you can throw away though!

Another tip, if you don’t want your exhaust to smoke from residue, wrap paper or paper towels or whatever over your exhaust system and it will stay clean. Have fun!!

Kellsport makes a great kit to do the whole truck.

I did my 2G religiously before each of the 4 New England winters it saw and outside of the leading edges of the crossmembers that hung down and got chipped there was zero rust on my frame.

Now that I have the kit I purchase a gallon a year at Grainger and a pair of spray cans and go nuts. I do the bottoms of the doors, tailgate, fender lips, inside the rockers and the bottoms of the front fenders by the firewall.

Yes, it's smelly and will likely make you dry heave, but it sure beats a rusty truck.

I'll do anything I can to keep this from rusting, I plan on keeping it for years.

I sprayed that when my 2015 was only a week or so old, the smell was so powerful that it took away the new car smell which kinda sucked, was not gonna repeat that again on my 2017.

I had so much FF in the front box sections of the frame of my 2G it would weep out of the frame on hot days in the summer.

Haha, went a bit heavy did ya. Really you only need a light coating, this stuff doesn’t wear off easy, just make sure the truck is clean and dry. I usually use about 2 cans before the winter and use one or two over the winter to reapply.

    Works well.

Hmmmm... never thought about undercoats. Do y’all suggest I use fluid film?

I live in the south so, no snow/ice. I’m not familiar with Toyota Tacoma’s rust resistance and I plan to keep this truck for a long time. Thanks for any help.

I bought a 1968 FJ-40 in 1970. One of the first things I did was lay down a heavy coating of the black undercoating. Its 2018 now, 48 years later. The VAST majority of this truck's existence has been on the immediate coast of Northern Calif. I firmly believe the undercoating has SAVED this truck from dissolving over the decades.
