K&N Air Filter Question

Just picked up a K&N filter and noticed it was MUCH thinner than the factory filter that came in my truck.....do these really work better than the stock filter? sucker cost me about 50 bucks! I hope it works well! Anyone care to share their experience with this product?

 

they work good as long as you clean it regularly. i have one, dont notice any mileage or performance increase but its nice to never have to buy one again.

 

they work better than your stock, in my opinion, as long as you keep it clean and dont over-oil them when you clean them. they allow more air to flow through them, but the oil catches the debris. if you over-oil you are going to gunk up your maf sensor. i did notice a slightly better accleration after i installed mine. i think i gained ~.5mpg....but i could be wishful thinking too

To the OP - make sure its seated properly in your airbox. And to elaborate further, make sure you keep it cleaned regularly. I've owned several K&N drop-ins and I would clean them about once every 6 months. The oil catches the dirt/dust. If the oil is 'full' (so to speak) - it can't capture anymore which will allow dust/dirt go through - and that is why you need to keep it clean.

 

the box says I only need to clean it every 50K? how do you clean it?

yeah buy the cleaning kit. it comes with a cleaner and then the oil in an aersol can. i think its $20 where i live. i usually check mine every other oil change. which happens to be around 6 months in between. you are going to have to decide how often you clean it by how much buildup you have on the filter

Yeah big note here, make sure your filter is 100% dry after you clean it but before you spray the oil on it. If not you obviously risk getting water in your engine.

I usually put my stock filter back in my intake and let the k&n dry for a good day or so before swapping them. That way i can still drive the taco while the filter is drying out.

Do not over oil it. This is very important. At the Chevy dealer I work at, I have sold many Mass Airflow Sensors to customers who have over oiled their K&N. It may not be a problem on Tacomas, but follow the instructions carefully about oiling the filter.

 

i wouldn't waste money. just do it in the afternoon/evening, and let it dry overnight.

I've had one for three years, love it. clean/oil intervals will depend on where you drive. in virginia, i clean it every 10,000 miles or so...but when i'm in florida (lots of dirt roads), i do it about twice as often. i may be a little excessive, but i'd rather do that than have crap in my engine.

I have both of those

 

K&N has a high flow rate but is notorious for its lower than average filtering capability. There are all kinds of tests posted online about this.

 

You don't need a special cleaning kit, just use any biodegradable soap that can be mixed with water, I use Simple Green.

My 79 Toyota 4wd truck went over 300,000 miles on a K&N and I only cleaned it when it was really really Nasty looking.

You will get lots of people chiming in that K&N aren't any good because they heard from a friend that knew a guy that dated the neighbors cousins who heard her brother in law worked with a dude that had a friend who's dad heard K&N Sucked from a guy that never owned one.
