What's the point of extended travel on a 2wd truck out here far from the desert?

There are like fifteen malls within an hour drive. I'll crawl over every curb stop I see in 4L with the rest of the bros.

    YES!!!

Hit the 500 mile mark on the rear end... so need to get the oil changed and inspect the gears... but need to figure out what socket to get and what oil as they take a different oil weight than OEM...

ECGS recommends Lucas Oil (non-synthetic) 85-140wt in all of their gear sets, so if you go with one of their fronts soon you may as well match the gear beer in the rear.

Sweet, will check autozone or pepboys tonight to see if they have it.

Won't be hard to do the change, but also need to take off the diff cover and need to get a 12point 5/16 socket for the bolts and they use an RTV instead of a gasket for the rear diff cover, so trying to figure out that portion.

Diff covers are easy... pick up a tube of RTV gasket maker and run a bead on the diff surface as well as the cover surface and smooth it out. Let them sit for 10 minutes so they start to get tacky and then put the cover back on and torque to spec.

Ummmmmm some pampers wipes are always needed, but you don't have too! We are pretty stocked on Diapers for the moment I think.

I guess I should make sure it is not a Lube Locker gasket... as that can just be reused...

The amount of info they provide with these things is not the greatest...

    Not even a manual...

Take a look at the diff and you should be able to tell if there's RTV on it or not. If there's a gasket there won't be a tiny bit of RTV squished out of the sides of the cover. If you see some RTV poking out then you know what you've gotta do.

When you pick up some gear oil get you a tube of permatex gasket maker, some degreaser, a razor blade, and a wire brush (soft metal like brass so you don't mar the mounting surface). A diff cover is a diff cover is a diff cover... the only difficult part about it all is cleaning up the surfaces of all the old RTV, but that's where the razor blade and some degreaser makes quick work of that, and then final scrub down with the wire brush. The most important part of the job is making sure the mounting surfaces are clean and dry before you use the RTV. It may help you to stuff shop towels in the diff when the cover is off so you don't go slinging old RTV chunks inside of it while you're cleaning the cover surface.
