What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Right, I’ve never messed with the diff so I dunno what would make it do whatever.


Maybe I should just find a second gen axle and just swap it

 

Maybe one bearing, I can’t see two

 

@JKO1998 if it turns out your differential does need work, which I believe is unlikely. Then you should just buy a used diff, it'll cost a lot less than fixing yours or buying a new one.

 

2nd gen axle is 1'' wider than your current one, would need to redo the leaf spring mounts and its the same rear diff so you don't gain any strength from it.

Right, leaf perchs and brake lines. Probably still cheaper than fixing a diff.

3rd gens are actually a bigger diff. Though im not super familar with them but they come with a 8.5 and a 9.5...but don't quote me on that. I don't plan on owning one so don't really care about them.

again though..not super likely its your diff. But you could measure if you wanted.

What do you think it could be then? I told him to specifically look at double cardan or whatever, which he said was fine.

Guess I could double check him. Next thing I was thinking is having a shop put the new bearing on so it’s for sure done right.

 

You can't just put in new bearings on the Pinon. It will change the backlash and then you have to re set that so you might as well rebuild the whole diff if it comes to that. Which again, not cheap. Be easy to check as the pinion itself should not move hardly at all. Its under bearing preload of over 100+ft/lbs torque.

I never knew resi's main pupurpo is not for cooling. There's actually another piston in there...

Theres alwaal the chance you got a bad bearing.

 

This is the seconded one I’ve tried, could be though.

 

The King bolt in shocks do have an IFP same as what's in a resevoir, so at least they're not emulsion shocks, but that also reduces the oil volume by that much more.

 

I'm going to ask a dumb question now, so may need the emoji with the umbrella to ward off the sh**storm, but....

Is it possible to mount the carrier bearing off by 180 degrees??? I notice that the flange is not on the exact center line of the bearing.
