Just saw on the news about an investigation into dog food. It was discovered that Gravy Train, owned by Smuckers, contains pentobarbital, a euthanization drug.

There are no federally acceptable levels of pentobarbital in food for humans or pets.

I just saw this and thought everyone that owns a dog should know this.

This is a link. The whole investigation hasn't been posted online yet, just the trailer for the episode:

Agreed. The source might be coming from rendered animals that have been euthanized. That's against Fed law too.

Apparently it's been a known problem for a while:

    https://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/CentersOffices/OfficeofFoods/CVM/CVMFOIAElectronicReadingRoom/ucm129131.

The important thing is that the news investigation named names and in 60% of the Gravy Train samples, pentobarb was present.

This sucks because I have an older dog 14+ years old and she has started losing her appetite for dry food. So I buy canned food that has the gravy in it to make it more to her liking. I put a small amount of canned to dry food. I won't be doing this anymore.

BTW broth works just as well. Also older dogs tend to need less protein because of aging kidneys and liver issues. The best way to bulk up the carbs is to add rice.

I hope this info helps anyone with an older dog.

I picked up a small road kill deer and ground it up for our dog. Sometimes the road kill is fresh enough for human consumption. This was borderline for us but still good enough for a dog and its nutritious.

I have a good friend that died of the type of cancer that Round Up causes. He used that crap by the bottle fulls.

It could be argued that any pet owner that feeds their dog a garbage food like Gravy Train is knowingly killing their dog albeit very slowly. Maybe the makers of Gravy Train just decided to help the owners speed up the process. :notsure:

In all seriousness please feed your pets a decent food not junk food for animals.

Way better and more natural than the canned stuff. I'm in disbelief of this study. I shouldn't be shocked I guess.

Sometimes I cook for my dog. Chicken + chicken broth + rice + cabbage makes a great food for dogs. That's what the Royals feed their Corgis.

His yard. I guess to kill weeds. I tried to warn him about the environmental hazards. At the time I did not know it caused cancer.

He was a lawyer and I am a biologist so I guess I got too preachy. However we live near a river reservoir and the run off from his yard was not a concern for him I guess. I refuse to use even basic fertilizer much less herbicides of any type.

I never hated my dogs that much to feed them Gravy Train. Sadly dog food is just a price point purchase for a lot of folks
