Those tidal creeks are going to be the ticket. Hate it that work interrupted your fishing what is up with that! Figure out the currents I am going to make a drift sock and anchor we could hit it up!

Might not be a bad idea to rig an anchor system or an anchor pole of some sort.

Figuring out the currents are easy as it moves with the tides. We plan around the flood and ebb tides and we're golden!

Definitely agree. I had anchor trolly's on both sides of my last kayak but will just put one on the new yak when it arrives. Down here anchors are necessary if you're not drifting with the current.

Cool idea on the spring clamp! We could easily fish all that structure between the two shorelines as it's only a 1/2 mile wide. Also as @ovrlndkull said, those tidal creeks are going to be the ticket too. If you find the pier on google maps and you zoom in without the satellite layer on, you'll see all the tidal creeks compared to the other side.

I typically hit Hatteras a few times a year for surf fishing and fish Oregon inlet on the kayak. I think my next trip planned is in Aprilish depending on how the blues and reds are running. Only live 3 hours away from Oregon inlet so weekend trips are pretty frequent in the spring and summer.

Yeah of course I do!!!! Offshore was my thing with gramps! I caught my Blue Marlin when I was 8.

Just don't know how you mistake finger mullet for ballyhoo especially when the package has big bold print for finger mullet.

About 30 min. or so. Also, if you're set on camping there are three campgrounds reasonably close. Two of them are right next to each other.

Point South KOA and The Oaks at Point South are the closer ones to Knowles Island and it puts you on the innermost point of Port Royal Sound so you'd pretty much be able to go either direction for a shit ton of fishing. Look at Google Maps to see what I mean...

The other one that is a bit further away is called Camp Lake Jasper RV Resort but is right next to Sgt. Jasper State Park where there are some really great fresh water ponds (where I took that pic of my kayak I posted previously). Nobody comes down here to fish fresh water though...so there's that.

My in-laws are in Long Island. I do alot of kayak fishing on the long island sound in the Oyster Bay area. Great fluking and weakfish this past summer. Two years ago I was striper fishing in April up there and I was having 50 and 60 fish days all in the 20-35 inch range.

You fish what is considered one of the harshest inlets on the east coast on a yak? o_O I don't think I have ever traversed that inlet and it of been calm enough to fish in a yak let alone bank fish. That and the boat traffic there?

Damn then we need to plan a trip to FL during the tarpon run! It's ok up here down in FL it's epic and the big mommas come out to play. Then you have to contend with getting that big of a fish in before a shark gets it. What a rush. That or hand lining Goliath groupers!

Sure do! Before they started working on the new bridge I would cross it and park on the south side. Launch the kayaks and fish the pilings (depending on how strong the current was) or paddle around the islands and fish on the sound side. I've never really gone on the ocean side of the bridge... that's where it gets really sketchy. It's a blast to catch the islands during low tide and pull the kayaks up for lunch.

Edit: Boat traffic is not terrible. I just stay out of the main passage inlet wherever it is that day.

Your not going to get a whole lot more diversity fishing in NC. Cobia, pompano, croaker, spot and reds are really the only difference I can think of at the moment, inshore at least. I will say that anything that gets you away from sea robins is a good place to fish!

Yeah I do that on the mud flats down where I have a beach house and dig around for clams as an added bonus for fishing that day. Got ya yeah I don't really call the inner/protected area of the inlet the inlet. To me the inlet is at the part where the ocean meets the sound and the traffic is. But I guess technically that is the inlet.

I caught more weakfish up north last summer than I did fluke. I've never seen them in those numbers up there. Most in the 15-20 inch range, biggest over 6 days of was 23 inches which is a baby compared to some of the gators in the South.

I don't think I have ever caught a weakfish I had to look them up. Unless I caught one as bycatch and didn't really pay any attention.
