Agreed. Stock actually pulls air from inside the fender area away from the engine

He didn’t ask that though in defense. Although you can gather and assume that by reading the op’s comment. So I wouldn’t really say it was simple, because it wasn’t a question.

Although not stated in typical question format, a quick read through indicated the OPs question.

Just get a drop in K&N high flow filter! It's already a CAI seeing that it pulls air in from the fender. Anything that will pull air on from the engine bay would have a negative impact. I looked at the TRDs and Idk I feel its just overpriced for a minor gain if any... that is all.

Not snake oil just VERY minimal gainz that you may not even see unless you get a dynotune, but its not worth it unless you do the entire intake and exhaust so you have a good breathing and exhaling setup.

The issue on these kits is there is no ram air system. All are similar to the factory stock airbox drawing air from the fender well. The idea would be to have a front mount large ram air intake. I have a tacoma with a Hilux 3.0 liter turbo diesel. The factory airbox is restrictive. I mounted aluminum tubing with a K&N filter huge difference in torque and top end power but the problem is the filter is drawing air inside the hot engine bay. I cant find a ram air kit so i am working on fabricating one. After the ECU needs remapping for the additional cold air flow. Here is a video of the diesel tacoma. The site will not allow videos so i had to convert it to a gif. GIF has no volume

More airflow over a similar surface area always equals less filtration. Do you want an engine that sounds cool with a couple hundred dollar tube connected to it with little if any noticeable performance gain? Or do you want an already proven intake system that has been proven to work at peak efficiency with our trucks, all why providing clean airflow into the engine? It’s really that simple.

Here you go I’ll run some testing.

Currently I’m running the TRD air filter drop in with stock intake. De-oiled the filter and running it as a dry filter, followed by PTR03-35160-AE Intake Flow Accelerator. In my 19 OR Tacoma

Little .50-1mpg gain. Slight noise difference but not throaty like KN. Slight mid range power, meaning better throttle response!

I love posts like these! So many haters out there. Why by buckle, or Levi jeans? You know you can buy pants that do the same thing from Walmart? They protect you just the same, so why buy the other brands? Guys want TRD parts, it’s their money, let them spend it lol! Live vicariously through them. Now, if the question is, is a CAI worth the money, that’s a different question. But shoot, if someone asks, should I drop a V8 in my new taco, my response is, do bears poop in the woods? OF COURSE YOU NEED A V8!

I installed the K&N in my 2018. Noticeable improvement in throttle response and HP. Livens up the truck a bit. The sound is nice, really screams at WOT (though burns more $ in gas, especially since the sound makes you wanna stomp on it more). No engine problems, warning lights etc. Overall I recommend this type of upgrade as it does wake up a lazy feeling engine.

No, don't be ridiculous. Included with the air filter are documented dyno results. There's no magic here, more airflow means more HP. Its not huge but noticeable.
