What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Looks like a fancy HAM radio.

 

Replaced the stock OEM wheel well liners with a thickness that I can only describe as "toilet paper" with @cnote4l's thick rubber liners. What a difference.

 

Icom 5100a Dual band Ham radio face plate.

Alright I'm about ready to test drive this thing. Probably a stupid question, but what happens if you engage 4WD and the manual hubs are in "FREE"?

 

you'll be in 2wd but sending power to the front diff and CVs.

 

Won't harm anything? I understand it's causing unnecessary wear but let's say I wanted to drive with the hubs locks but remain in 2WD for an indefinite distance.

 

I can shift from 2HI into 4WD while the truck is moving right?

Looks great. I'm going to have to take my bed off soon as well...and find somewhere to put it for a few days. Toytec ended up working things out, so that's good. It's interesting how much I've learned (in not that much time) about what I'd do (differently) if I started all over.

Edit: the social media dynamic of our current world is also intriguing to me. So different than just 5-10 years ago.

Man, that's a great unit. I'm getting another one if I ever decide to run two radios. Soooooo wish I could do APRS with it.

You can leave the hubs locks. Some say not too, but I used to literally all the time because ice would build up or the hubs would damn near freeze at times and i just got sick of dicking with them and never unlocked them.

yes, toyota says not to do it above 55mph. I always try to be coasting too when i do it.

 

Obviously, you are causing more parts to move; CV's, differential, front drive shaft, so would hurt gas mileage, but other than a bit of wear, no other harm. Have done it a lot in my 1984 and 1992 trucks, when alternating between paved roads and dirt/mud, saves getting out to lock in/out. No issues.

With the new shortened rear driveshaft in - for better or for worse it's TRULY 4x4. What a Clusterfuck this conversion has been.

I'm sorry TW, but with living in the middle of suburbia this is the closest to off-roading you're going to get. I mean, the truck is technically off the road is it not?
