Results of Severe Long Term Neglect and Construction Abuse

Aquired a friend’s 4Runner. It’s a 2003, limited. Or something. It’s had a hard life. Harder than 99% of vehicles on the road. My friend, we’ll call him Destroyer... only changed the oil. Sometimes. Basic maintenance was done to keep it on the road. He bounced it off a few trees. Ripped a few parts off. Zip tied it back together, and repeated that cycle. It’s hasn’t been really cleaned for the 10+ years he’s owned it other than light dustings. It’s last year was sitting in a field as a mouse house. And dumpster. I should mention Destroyer (We’ll call him “D” henceforth) worked on a foundation crew. Lots of concrete and tools and dirt. He’s also an avid surf caster, and had no problems leaving squid and dead fish (bunker ) rotting in the cab. An ex of his also spilled a quart of clam chowder in the rear footwell. Hazmat required for cleaning.


Full disclaimer, I will not go easy on this runner either. It has always been a work vehicle and my gf and I will continue using it as one. And it will continue to be a badass.

The interior is actually a major health concern and I don’t believe it’s worth re carpeting it. This will become a very no nonsense, bare bones workhorse once it’s road legal again. I will be moving carefully forward with everything inside the rig. I don’t want Hantavirus.

After cleaning with the gfs help. It’s still disgusting. Smells like a meat bin.


Getting into the front end suspension. Half shafts are blown. D drove on them with torn boots for the better part of 5years. And the coil overs were done years ago. It’s been on the bumpstops for some time.


Never had an alignment.


Why bother you may wonder? I wonder the same thing honestly. Engine is good. Minus no cooling fan. D got rid of that too. Gotta say these 4runners are built like tanks... it surprises me how much this thing has endured, and still runs perfectly. So far I’m into it a new battery and some oil when I get to changing it.

What it needs.
-cooling fan/clutch assembly
-halfshafts
-tires
-headlights
-tail lights
-seats
-interior... everything
-front bumper
-rear bumper
-rear door
-diff fluid change
-oil change
-tube doors for summer

This list will grow as I spend more time crawling around in it.

 

I forgot the mold. It’s impressive.

Edit: but I’m a full on sadist. Why smash my head into things when I can just break knuckles on the undercarraige? And possibly contract tularemia? Way more productive!!!

That looks like a vehicle that needs to die in order to save other vehicles. Poor thing needs to be put out of it's misery
