Got my Blackstone Labs oil analysis:
"This is a decent first report for your Tacoma. Universal averages can be found in the far right column
and show typical wear levels for this type of engine after ~5,800 miles on the oil. This oil didn't see quite as
much use and wear metals still match up nicely with averages. The only thing that gives us pause in this
sample is the presence of potassium. There just aren't many sources for potassium in a gasoline engine
and it could show some coolant getting into the oil along with sodium. If so, it's not a lot and it hasn't
affected wear to any large degree. Just check back."

Anyone else get high Potassium? It's only at 44 ppm(?), but I'll definitely have to keep an eye on it.

Well mine was a gradual failure. Took 6months. As yours are still OEM i'd imagine they would show the same signs slowly over time before nuking. Should be able to catch it. But really your at the point where if you can, might as well just do it.

How do you know the compressor isn't kicking on other than it wont get cold? Does the AC light light up? If it does, check the wires on the compressor to make sure the voltage goes up when the switch is on.

Have you checked the AC pressure?

    I do like bananas...:bananadance:

I'm guessing the head gasket may have a small leak in it. At 324k, I'm kinda scared to mess with anything in the engine since everything runs fine.

You still have a welder? Could do it yourself it you built the tool and bought a cheap 20ton press for less than 1000. Only like 450??ish in parts.

So..does the AC light even light up when engaged? the clutch could also just be out on it. Not a hard fix either...more a pita due to location.

Lol probably. I feel terrible about it; I have no idea when the timing belt was changed...but it is a non-interference engine. I'm basically just waiting till I replace the engine or the belt breaks and I tow it home.

....also need to replace the valve cover gasket :anonymous::bananadead::crapstorm:

well...sounds like you should just buy a new timing belt kit and water pump with valve cover gaskets, headgaskets and maybe even intake gaskets while you're there. Injector seals too.

I knowww you're right. I need to replace the pulleys and tensioners while I'm in there as well and either buy or make the tool to move the crank.

The thing is, that's at least $300 in parts going into an old engine. Pretty sure I can get a used engine with a third of the miles for about $800.

Am I being dumb? In my head, I'm quite reasonable, but everyone agrees with me.

Nah can easily swap a newer motor in.

But even if i was doing that...id still do all of that maintenance to it just to make sure. Least the timing belt and water pump while the motor was out. If im putting in a new motor, i want it as new as possible.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
got more parts in... OEM trailer hitch (my dad stole the one off my truck.. oh well) and an OEM trailer wire harness, because I've burnt through to many aftermarket ones. only paid 260 after all was said and done... the employee discount is nice for weird people like me that like OEM.

Oh, for sure. Once I get the new engine, all of the above will be swapped out prior to install. Best case scenario, I find a rollover v6, manual, 4x4, trd and just swap everything over. But if I only do engine and trans, I'll probably replace the clutch, flywheel, and engine/transmission mounts while I'm in there.

My welding has improved a wee touch, still a novice but I tried hard to break these tacks off and it held so I think it should be good.

Today I learned the 4.7's came with a manual. That would be a sick swap in a 1st gen taco.
