take a look at post #1. legal in CA is NONE. however.. its sorta like front license plates... its FINE no one follows it and its pretty much a "meh.." deal. With tint, if its crazy dark, youre asking for it.. my original question is "do you think it really IS that dark to be 'illegal'?"

well.. good luck man. You WILL get pulled over in CA. You can have ANYTHING on your back windows but your fronts legally should have nothing (or a light tint) and windshield ABSOLUTELY nothing. But still.. dont do 5%. and skip court when you get the ticket - you'll loose. Sorry dood.

i don't know if anyone stated why there are window tint laws but the main reason is for the officers safety. I personally wouldn’t want to be walking up on cars and not know what the person is doing inside. but the pic in the first one dose not seem to be that dark, but compaired to none it is.

Your absolutely right mongo. It's an officer safety issue. I have several friends that are LEO and they all say that they absolutely HATE tint on the front windows. They also say that they would really like to have it on their vehicle but understand why they don't, and thus they do not.

I live in the Central Valley of California, and man if you think you've got it bad in San Diego, come up here for a summer when it's 115 and no wind and not a cloud in the sky, that when you wish you did have tent on your windows.

Back to my point. If/When you are pulled over the officer walks up to your car window, now if they can see both your hands, they relax a little, cause knives and guns don't kill people hands kill people. If they can't see whats going on inside a car when they pull up to it, they are going to more tense and definitely more likely to resort to physical means of submission if they feel that something fishy is going on.

I don't know about you but I was raised that if you get pulled over, leave your hands on the steering wheel till the officer asks you to get something, then make very slow deliberate movements, and always make sure they can see your hands.

I look at front window tint in California like this, you can put it on if you want. You may or may not get pulled over for having it, but if it's the end of the month, or it's some new officer right out of the academy on probation wanting to show his trainer that he has what it takes, or some officers wife has been cheating on him, or any other reason to piss a cop off, you better believe they will pull you over for anything, and if your especially lucky, on that day, they try to find more than 1 thing. cell phone (whole other story), speeding, seat belt, distracted driving, no front plate, no insurance, no d/l, no reg, old reg. You fail the attitude test and boy...that might land you in the back of the popo car, where you are lucky if the back windows are tinted.

Short of the long, you may get away with it for awhile, but sooner or later you'll run into someone who's having a really crappy day, and then guess what, you'll have a really crappy day too.

Last year when I was in San Diego I got pulled over for my tint being too dark... what am I suppose to do de tint my windows before going to Ca? He originally pulled my over because my plate # did not match the vehicle it went with. Then he found out he put in the wrong number. He let me go..... just said to keep the front windows down..... whatever.

That's one of the downsides of doing certain mods on your car. Others that come to mind include the blacked out tail lights, or blue marker lights. If you're going to drive in another state, you have to be aware that their laws can be different.

actually, that's what i meant to put at the end...

front tint is illegal in California except for medical reasons (my step mother needed it due to her MS)

that being said... my windows are tinted pretty dark...

My wife got pulled over for our tint, it is limo in the back which is fine for California, and 20 up front which is illegal, the cop didn't give her a ticket just ran her license. I'm glad I'm in texas I dont have to worry about any tint laws, and I can carry a gun in my truck if I want, California is gay and has a lot of gay laws and taxes. The state just wants money back. You could pay the fix it fine, and get them retinted, I think some places do it for as little as 40 for the front two windows.

You may want to check with Cali on this, but there is a good chance that even if you take it off or pay then fine and leave it it may still show up on your record or add points to your license. Just like the advertisements for those radar detectors if you get a ticket for speeding they will pay it. Guess what you may not have to pay it but it will effect your record. Most insurance companies are looking for a reason to increase your premiums - why give them an excuse. It may give them a reason to question the mods on your ride just to boost the $. Always remember it gives an excuse to stop you and look for other violations.

^x2, except that the window tint in California is a fix it ticket which doesn't reflect on your driving record like a moving violation would. It's much like the new cell phone law in Cali, it doesn't add a point, but it goes from a regular $20 ticket to about $160 once you get everything said and done. Points on your record in California or mainly given for moving violations.

What is allowed % in your state? Did they put a meter on it? What brought it to their attention?

In Virginia you are allowed 50% ...... I have mine at 35% ... knowing it is too dark but I don't bring attention to myself ...... no loud music, no speeding, no reckless.

If you are in the wrong and know it just man up and pay it.

    Good luck.
