The Frontier Pro-4X package is pretty much the equal of the TRD Off Road package.

Stock for stock the Toyota has a bit more ground clearance, but 5 minutes with a hair dryer (search for melt mod) and you can fit 285s on the Frontier stock.

To the OP, if you have the cash to buy a Tacoma and your current truck has such low miles, you can afford to wait just a little while for the market to shake out because there are several things you can count on in the near future:

    1. The Tacoma is selling well so Toyota is not going to make any significant changes (unless the new Ranger forces them to step it up)

    2. The Ranger will be out soon with the most power and torque in the midsize class.

    3. If the Ranger is the hit it looks like it might be, EVERYONE will be upping their game.

    4. A redesigned Frontier can't be too far away as the Titan was just redesigned (unless Nissan decides to redesign the current redesign. Talk about weird angles)

JMHO, but it sounds like your existing Tacoma is all the truck you need and does your truck duties well. With only ~80k miles on it there are many more years of service left in it.

I would keep the current truck and spend my money on something else with all the creature comforts you seek.

Actually, I'd just drop an Android Auto/Carplay head unit in the current truck and add heated seats, then sit back and wait for all the new market contenders to juggle the rankings.

Why would Toyota make a truck to cruise at 1500 rpm yet at that rpm it make zero fuckin power! Wouldn’t it make sense to take 50 hp off the top and put it at 1500 rpm so it could stay in top gear without shifting all the time? My thoughts.

My trucks shifting has gotten words better since new. This whole learning process isn’t a new thing.... all of my fords did it too.

Here’s the deal though. If you don’t like it, don’t force yourself to and don’t buy one?

You have to watch YouTube, Atkinson cycle engine. You see, the power is there if needed, but otherwise it is in coast mode for mpg.

Nope. The power is not there at 1500. Not at all. That’s the rpm you’ll be at when you’re trying to get a load moving.

But with the OP it sounds like its more than the drive, he complains about the fit too and that's something that won't go away, he has to do something or live it everyday and then we'll have to live with the griping.

    Just saying :D

To save the most gas at 1500 rpm

Edit: HP comes with a price tag

You would be right except for one thing: these engines were DESIGNED to run at those rpms. If it were DESIGNED to run at 1800 rpm and you ran it at 3500 all the time, then your argument is valid. If it's designed to run at 3000 rpm and you run it there, then that is optimal operating conditions. Don't let the red line rpm influence you at all. It's all about optimal design rpm, and lower is not always better is all applications. My truck is geared to run at 2600 at 70 mph. I don't even think twice driving it there for 12 hours heading to Florida.

The fit is only affected by the sunroof. I put that in my original post for pointers. Wondering if there was a seat adjustment I wasn't aware of. It doesn't sound like it. I'm realizing I'm probably not able to get sunroof. Too bad I prefer all the other options.

Of course you will and that's fine. Just don't think old rules apply to new engines. 3K oil change anyone?

Then you'll be unhappy without the suroof. I like the sunroof, the sunshine makes one feel good!

We have it on our 4runner but the one in the Taco looked too small to me to really make a difference and I'm ok without it as I don't need a full size truck.
The only way to raise the roof on the taco is to have the seat shaved (lowered) at an upholstery shop as far as I know, but that may make the next buyer of your truck move on to the next one??

I was not initially crazy about getting the sunroof but that was the only way to get the heated seats, now I am glad to have it, love to enjoy the warm weather when we have it!

I had to give it up or wait for what seemed forever for a white L/B 4X4, my thinking was I could add it aftermarket and I can get one cheaper than oem, but I'm getting along and I'm happy with or without.

Sunroof is the only way to get heated seats?

TRD Off-Road here, heated seats and no sunny...
