What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Come to think of it... If Tundra rotors and calipers fit the front of our trucks, are Tundra drums any bigger then ours, and would they fit?

My drums are going out too! Going this route it’s next on my list.

 

im going to look into getting newer 4runner rear discs on my truck.. I just want to keep the e brake.

 

Excessive wear and heat can cause it. If they aren't too far gone, they can be turned to true them up. But drums are cheap. Probably should just replace them when you do the shoes.

FWIW, the drums 'float' a bit when the wheels aren't mounted. Verify you have the same dragging sound when the wheels are mounted up.

 

What year 4Runner disk brakes work with 1st gens? I heard sequoia brakes will work to.

Sounds like the spring on your star wheel is either gone or stretched, the adjuster shouldn't move so easy that it can overtighten.

 

So that part of the spring is holding it, maybe you just initially set them to drag too much. Drums should drag but not a crazy amount and ours only adjust when you pull the ebrake in reverse.

 

Finally joined in on the brake upgrade trend going around here. Got the $2500 brake job finished up today. Thanks for the help with that Dan. It was a lot of fun. @turbodb

That would make me think that the adjuster wheel holding spring is weak, it shouldn't adjust that much or that easily.

Hmm, well that is how it is supposed to work. Is your ebrake handle hard to pull?

 

Well that is also normal, I'm outta ideas without being able to physically feel the tension on the star wheel and initial drag setting

 

Yeah you can go nuts with the cleaner but be nice to the rubber boots on the wheel cylinders they don't like prolonged brake clean, turns the rubber gummy.
