What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Suppose it is possible, only place you can really check that is at the lever under the drivers foot area. Are the bellcranks on the rear of the drum assemblies firm, they have springs and set screws to set pre load.

I disagree. Drum brakes a better for towing than discs more brake contact area for stopping. Why big rigs still use them.

Not sure there is any good reason to change the rear to discs other than you just want too.

FROF kit for 4runner disc to tacoma uses the toyota mini drum brake for the ebrake. Sure you could do the same.

Sooooooo. ..what was the pedal feel like and did you try @turbodb as well? Really curious if there was a noticeable difference.

 

Definitely better. Hard to quantify it yet. I need some more time with them but the initial impression is the stopping power is better, as expected.

Installed 13WL reman calipers from Napa along with new OEM discs and ceramic pads.

The pedal feel is different from what I had before but is not mushy at all. I do have to push further down before they engage but, when they do engage, the stopping power is better. It may even get better after bedding them in, per Dan's experience with his.

I did not drive his truck so no way to compare them.

 

We messed this up . Next time we get together, and after you've bedded, we should trade to see the difference given the different master cylinders.

 

Definitely. I thought about it today but It was too soon. I had almost zero experience with these so a comparo might not have meant that much. Besides, this will be a great excuse to get together again.

And just saw this new emoticon. Seems appropriate for how much money I spent to upgrade these brakes.

 

Was the only reason the price is so high because you had to get wheels and tires?

 

Of course. Had to get larger wheels and new tires. Its all good tho. Well worth it.

That is pretty cheap. Just the discs, pads and shims from Gunny were $201. Were your calipers free?

 

I wasn't going OEM and rockauto doesn't care if I return my taco calipers as cores for the powerstop tundra calipers

 

Napa doesn't care if I return Tacoma calipers either.

 

Damn it. I wanna know how different..if at all..the Mc makes between the sub generations.

Installed an ome lift, 32s are going on next weekend!! Hoping it will settle out an inch or so but I’m digging the ride quality...

 

Class 8 tractor/trailers use drum brakes for cost not stopping power. The company I work for only buys equipment with air disk brakes now because it’s more reliable and requires less maintenance than drums. They are a lot more expensive up front over drums though.

Also drum brakes do not dissipate heat anywhere near as well as disks do, making disks the far superior choice for heavy use.

All that being said...I found the drums on my Tacoma and 4Runner to be completely adequate. Never had any issues on either. Now that I’ve gone to an FZJ80 rear, the best part of the disks is not having to open up the brake system to pull an axle or work on the spindle.

 

So it's time to get a new muffler. New England snowy road pretreating fucks any steel not coated in Fluid Film. Been looking at the Aero Turbine 2525. Sounds great on YouTube but haven't heard in person. Anyone running one regret it?

 

You're using 12" shocks I'm assuming?

 

One thing to keep in mind is that rear drums more or less float on the axle, until the wheel is torqued in place. This can mimic an out of round condition.

 

10" 2.5 Resi shocks, the billet rod ends alone add about an inch to either side though.
