IndyFastlane, As it is without SSP, the trans shifts like a bad driver driving a manual that is always shifting up too soon then down shifting, then shifting up again :frusty: appreciate your feedback, I can see where being in the right gear at the right time may offset any mpg gains of being in the higher gear due to mpg loss due to inefficiencies of shifting up and down

I have noticed this as well.

As far as MPG goes, I've seen an overall increase in my MPG. I think once you get used to it and start driving normally, you will see this increase. I have a feeling that when people install this, they are "testing" it and driving maybe more aggressive than normal. Once you settle down, it gets better

Thank you D1gger, I will probably "test" the performance when I install it too, hope to get similar mpg results

I read the majority of the posts on this thread this morning and many times I feel like joining the one who said he is ready to drive his Tacoma back on the showroom floor through the window because of the transmission issues. But this thread has given me hope so I ordered my ShiftSense Pro at noon. #1973.

    Me three...
Only had it happen a few times in 10,000 miles; seems to happen only under a certain set of circumstances.
I wondered if it was the OE program stepping in, and not Shift Sense causing it.
    FWIW, I use map #2.

Order #1976. I went to see a Lemon Law lawyer yesterday and my case is not as cut and dry as I read Ohio's Lemon Law to be. The Attorney said Toyota always plays hardball and draws out its cases. So I ordered SSP as one last hope to fix the issues with my truck. But I will continue with the lemon law attorney.

As a side note, my 2016 has all the typical gear hunting, flares, surges etc that everyone else seems to also have, although I test drove a 2017 and it was about 80% less annoying than mine. The dealer drove mine and concurred. I took it to a more local dealer and the "Tacoma tech" with training on this trans issue said, "mine is the worst he has driven." I have had the tsb flash done twice and nothing changed. I returned the truck to the dealer a third time as my wife was driving and it almost crashed during a surge (I've warned her to press the brake WAY harder than you think you need to). Well at the third visit, they had my truck for 28 days - only to say it is all normal. So they had my truck for a total of 37 days -which in Ohio (30 days) is a main element for a lemon law buy-back.

I installed mine today and love it! The main reason why I bought it was due to a big hill I drive up every day from work.

That is normal, when you see that that means the trucks ECU downshifted you. Shift Sense Pro cannot prevent the truck ECU from downshifting. It is no different than driving around in S5 mode without shift sense, the truck will up-shift and down shift 1-5 while still showing 5.

One common misunderstanding is Shift Sense Pro cannot "hold" a gear. It commands up-shifts and down shifts in S Mode, no different than if you did it manually with your hand. But the trucks ECU base on engine load and ECU programming can and will downshift if it thinks it is necessary.

What's really needed is a way to control the downshifting. SSP is great, and could take over the world if they could figure this out.

They can't the way it is currently implemented. All that system does is up shift and down shift based on speed. It is no different than manually shifting via S mode. That is why you have to use S mode to use it, it is a automatic S mode shifter and nothing else. The only way to really control how the AT shifts is through the ECU mapping.

Yes I know how it works. I'm just saying if OP could control downshifts, that would cure the 4/5/6/5/4 tranny dance these things do.

I am happier now with the ssp, wow! Approximately 10 minutes to install and what a difference. I like my truck alot more! In mode 3 it's more like my gen 2 Tacoma! I am going to try mode 2 now! Mode one is way better than stock shifts. A 4.0 liter gen 2 motor and this transmission would have been great!

I haven't followed this thread since around July last year when I bought the ShiftSense Pro for my 2017 4.0 Taco.

I literally use it every day, shifting into Sport mode is 2nd nature after about a week. After I got over being super sensitive to the shift pattern and just let it do it's thing I was fine. I love how it shifts now. From time to time I'll drive in D just to remind myself of how badly Toyota screwed up on their stock transmission ratios. Happy to answer any questions if need be.
