Best Dash Cam for Taco

Thanks so much everyone, I got an installed the Rexing but...the quality is pretty bad I should have listened to @egres

Anyway I am going to run it for a few days and see how it works before I decide if I should keep it or not. One thing that I can't really figure out is how to install the rear view camera.

I put it above my slider but when I view it it shows too much of my bed lol. Since the resolution is so poor you can not read the license plate before it disappears from sight. I'm not really sure how I would run it to where the rearview camera should be(next to tailgate handle?). I would probably need to drill a hole and I am not confident I know how to weather proof the camera in that case.

You guys all mount inside cab?

 

I mounted my rear camera inside the cab on the rear slider. I don't think they are ment to be mounted outside the cab.

I wouldn't be to concerned with the rear camera being able to read license plates..... if they hit you you'll have to opportunity to write it down.

Anyways i doesn't matter the which camera it is they aren't any better than the naked eye...but they are a unbiased recored of the events and really that is what you need it to do.

I have a front facing webcam, but am wondering whether anyone has thoughts about how to set up a rear facing webcam when you have a canopy on the bed. The view through the rear cab window and then through the canopy is pretty dark, and I can’t imagine the cam image would be of any use. Thoughts anyone?

 

You might need to wire it all the way to the back of the canopy. Is the canopy waterproof? If not you may want to forego the rearview camera

 

It is a new Leer canopy and, so far, waterproof. Mounting in side the canop somehow does seem to be the only solution. Wiring it all the way to the front webcam would certainly be a challenge. And I wonder if the signal strength would be sufficient to take the image that far? Haven’t looked yet to see if there might be a wireless rear cam on the market. That might provide an answer; although likely to be wickedly expensive.

 

Oooh my bad man, I thought when you said canopy you meant one of those fabric things. I think if you wire it that far through a hard top it'll be fine you just need to put some stoppers and maybe silicone it in use some metal tubing around your wire to prevent people messing with it and weather etc.

As far as I know there is no wi fi for rear view dash cam. But idk, still trying to figure out my rexing lol.

 

Sorry, yes, canopy in my part of Canada. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions on this. Next step is to upgrade my webcam to dual camera setup from the bewildering selection out there.

 

Ok, here i go. Throwing monkey wrench, but it has to be done.

I have bought Rexing v1 3rd gen. 4k.
Tested it and wasn't impressed, so talk to bunch of russians because they experts on dashcams.
They told me that most manufacturers are dishonest and use falls advertisement. Thay use software to enhance video to look better then hardware ( camera) filming it. For examples they can make 720 video look like 1080. And 1080p to 2k megapixel.

They use things like video interpolation, in simple terms they generate missing pixels. So its like digitally stretching immage and smoothing it.

For example, its like this:

STEP 1: Software stretches it but now has missing pixels

STEP 2: Software fills in missing pixels buy guessing collor around it.

So software enhance video but its dishonest for manufacturers to claim higher resolution.


I will do more reading if Rexing v1 gen 3, is just same 1080p versions with better softe.


On side note, OP buy better cam for front and use one you have for rear.

To guy who said that you dont need see license plates in the back, you wrong. Theres plenty of instance when someone hits your rear bumper and take off. Because they drove off so fast, front one did not capture plate #. But rear one did.

For example, we just talked about Pruveeo F5. Weeks before it was sold as 720p camera. Now they removed that from title and in description put 1080p....
They stretching video, hardware did not change.

 

Not true, without battery, last file before power loss (aka accident footage) will not be saved, file fill be corrupted. EDIT: i was wrong because camera he's talking about has charge stored to save footage if power cut.

For test, unplug you cam or take out sd card when its recording. Last file will not be there or will be unplayable. EDIT: I did this with rexing cam, and it did not safe.

I’ll throw in a vote for anything by BlackVue. I use the DR650-GW 2ch and love it. It has been replaced by a newer model. BlackVue cams aren’t cheap but they are good and last

 

I have a BlackVue DR590 2 ch. in both cars, they just came out with a DR590W for WiFi.
Bought mine from the Dashcam store, good customer service.

 

I bought a cheap one at Walmart a year ago and when the card fills up it quits. it is supposed to loop but does not?

Do these better units reliably loop when set to do so? I need something that I do not have to fidgit with and reset and re-program while driving. Just set it once and go.

Yes the Thinkware f750 loops as it should. The only thing is that because it is writing over previous data is that it will tell you to formatt the memory card which is done with the dash cam. It only take 2 seconds to preform and off you go.

 

I am glad everyone is sharing their experiences with these dash cams. It is so hard to get good information from reviews on Amazon and even from Youtube...

How is the Anker @BEE-ROCK ? I love that brand I wish I had searched more and tried that one.

My Rexing has been working okay and the video quality is not great...but I mean I figure in the case that I really need it, it should do the job. Wiring for the rearview camera was pretty easy you just need to tuck it around all the trim around the ceiling of the cab and there is even a tiny channel above the rear window that is slightly wider and allows for easier camera placement.

The one gripe I have is that the rearview camera is difficult to position. After some practice I can get it in place fairly quickly. However, there is a plastic tab attached to it with a sticker that allows you to 'mount'(adhere) it to something but since it is tucked between the ceiling material there is nothing to stick it to firmly. So pretty much after any car wash I have to readjust it and get the angle just right. You also see a lot of truck bed and not a lot of road...or cars/trucks/vehicles behind you...

 

I just installed it this weekend. So far it's working great! I will post some pictures when I get a chance. If I can I'll upload some example footage. Hopefully this evening! I made my own hardwire kit for the unit and the original USB cable was long enough to route through the headliner and down the drivers side A pillar.

EDIT: Forgot to mention video quality. During the day it is excellent! You can read license plates very clear. Night time quality is also good. However, you can't read license plate numbers. Texas does have white and black plates. Light from your headlights seems to reflect bad off the plates. This makes it difficult for the camera to pickup on the tag number. I fully expected this though because even I have difficulty reading tag numbers at night.

For the "hard wire" I used a cheap USB 12v charger. Took it apart and soldered wires to the leads. Then used heat shrink to cover everything up. I connected the wires I soldered to the charger, to a fuse tap behind the coin tray. Pluged the USB cable in from the camera and it works great. Ill try and get some pictures of that as well.

 

Anybody used this product before? I was researching and Old Shark seemed to be a pretty popular economical version dash cam. This one is 4k and 170 degree wide angle, plus it's on sale today for $52.49 + same day shipping.
