This one is all crusty, and the slip joint no longer slips. I’m going to order a new one and rebuild this one for a spare.

 

I found the problem. The bolt that holds the yoke on the output shaft came all the way out. That, in turn, destroyed the U-joints.

 

Nice. Much better than a new t case, and you got a spare, bonus. Good day.

 

Was it just the joints? Looks like the cardan could use a new ball as well.

 

@HolyHandGrenade, if that's the rear output on the tcase, then the PO did a hack and tap slip yoke eliminator, in my experience, you're going to keep having this problem if you just replace the bad parts. Nuts on yokes are egg shaped so they can't back themselves off like this bolt did. If you install a proper slip yoke eliminator and get a driveshaft to match, you'll be much better off.

 

I was wondering about that. I’m just taking the Jeep out of the garage now. I was planning to research this when I went inside. I guess that’s what I’ll do then.

It’s my Wife’s rig, so I’m not going to put it back together all cobbed up.

Yeah, I’ll be getting a complete new driveshaft anyway.

Of course, I’ll have to figure out what length I’ll need after the SYE first.

 

Advance adapters is what I've installed on both my TJ's and it's the only brand I've installed for customers. Their kits come complete with great directions which will be super helpful for you considered it's a somewhat advanced level mechanical job, simple but just requires some good mechanical experience and definitely patience and staying calm while doing it. Once you've done a couple, it's an easy job but if you've never done it, it can be intimidating and with poor directions, very easily confusing. As for the driveshaft, Tom woods makes a ton of jeep driveshafts and the AA kit will come with the work sheet you need to measure and fill out to have Tom woods build you the proper shaft. I have had only one Tom woods shaft go bad and all the parts they use to build them are OEM parts for Cherokee driveshafts, so you could potentially end up with one double cardan rebuild kit for your front and rear driveshaft, u joints are all the same on them, so you could fit everything you need to rebuild your front and back driveshaft in your two cargo pockets.
