I know it's a 1GR. Did you read the link I posted from the 4Runner forum?

Also here's another link about 0/5-20 in late model Toyota engines. The entire GR line is on the list.

.... there are two variants of the 1GR.... the single vvti (found in our trucks that still to this day spec 5w-30), and the dual vvti 1gr that spec the thinner 0w-20

Yes...I'm aware of that. He's not the only one running 0/20 in the Taco's 1GR

cool deal, you do you. zero point to run the 0/20wt in our 1gr's. If you want the benefits of a 0w-X oil for startup protection simply run a 0w-30 like i do. Better cold and startup lubrication, and proper viscosity when the motor is at operating temp.

My oil cap and owner's manual both recommend 5w-30 and it's all I've ever used (synthetic) in my '06 2TR-FE. Later recommendations for 0w-20 is for fuel economy.

Do some research on BITOG site. There's evidence that 0/30 may not flow as well as 5/30 in normal cold temps. It's only in extreme conditions that 0w even shows a bit of startup benefit. If you're going to run 30, you're better off running 5/30 unless you live in the most extreme cold conditions

LOLOLOL..... now thats funny. 0w-30 HAS to flow better at cooler temps than 5w-30 otherwise it wouldnt get its spec in the first place.

But hey, you run what you want. Even if the above was the case, id still never run 20wt in my 1gr, that is just too thin for a motor that wasnt designed for it.

I ran Amsoil HD 5W30 rated for gas and diesel when I had my 3.4L. Great oil.

Just double checking because I have a 4.0 and everyone is talking about 0w-30 and 0w-20 and I’m here using 5w-30 so I just was checking

We use 5-20 on thousands of 1GR's every year. It's fine. Most Toyota dealers haven't carried 5W30 bulk for over 5 years.

I bet most of you will find 5w20 billed to your oil changes if done by a dealer.

We got 3 pumps. 5w-30, 5w-20, and 0w-20. No tomfoolery with our dealership oil!

Research 0w vs 5w/30. I guess the oil geeks on BITOG site are wrong, huh?

As for me? I use M1 5/30. But it's not about what I use. I was merely defending the OP's decision to run 0/20 in his rig. But all the tin hats came out and yelled that the sky was falling.

That's an excellent oil. Very underrated in layman's circles

Legit question. The thing I don't get is, to get maximum fuel economy, don't you want to reduce friction? If friction is reduced doesn't that mean better lubrication?
