Right. Engineered plastics are suitable for parts that are traditionally steel. Like oil pans.

What the heck does a truck bed have to do with an oil pan? Weak argument.

Because they are traditionally steel and have only relatively recently been able to be replaced with engineered plastics.

Well, maybe the plastic oil pan is better? Probably. Rather than denting and leaking, maybe it bounces off stuff? I don’t know, as I havent had chance to test it, but I have loaded blast rock in my Tacoma’s bed, and the bed didn’t dent or deform, so I know it’s tough.

I would guess that the plastic oil pan helps them achieve either the same strength, at a reduced weight, or allows them to mold a more complex part, at a lesser cost. Neither goal do I have a problem with, as again, I ask you to point me to threads about people’s plastic oil pans failing. It’s not an issue.

Like it or not, cars from all makes are more reliable, lest rusty, less expensive (accounting for inflation), and longer lasting these days, largely thanks to better material science, and a shitload of plastic. I hardly ever see any car broken down at the side of the road anymore. I barely even see a car with a burned out headlight, and rusted out cars (barring those early Tacoma’s with the cruddy painted steel frame) are pretty much a thing of the past as well.

    I think we're agreeing.

I'm just amazed how some on here will defend Toyota engineers using engineered plastics in places that are traditionally metal, but the second somebody else does it it's wrong.

That CV angle looks like it’s lifted already...cool if it’s been designed that way maybe the boots won’t get chewed through?

From what I read, Ford switched back to steel oil pans in the HD pickups after two years, though as I understood it was more for cost reasons as the automotive business is all about nickel-and-diming.
More like 4 months... And plastic oilpans in F150s is a new application starting in 2015 or so, and those plastic oilpans are having widespread leakage issues within a couple of years of their introduction. Tacomas have had composite beds since 2005.

Don't want to highjack the thread but yes...the 2018 Focus RS pricing in Canada is ridiculous! I'd love an RS as an all season commuter car/ fun car / occasional track toy to replace my current Mazdaspeed 3 but I have trouble justifying the difference from a $36,048 Focus ST (comparably equipped to a ST3 US version) to a $61,838 Focus RS (even if it is the limited edition.)

Edit: to be fair, the MSRP on the 2017 RS (in blue) was $51,263. so it's the additional $10K premium for the 2018 Limited Edition that is truly ridiculous. Even at $51K, I'm not sure the RS is worth the $15K premium over an ST. It should be more like an $8K package.

...and to tie it back into the Ranger. I REALLY hope that the 2.3 is tuned closer to the Focus RS specs (350/350) than the Explorer specs (280/310).

It's possible the normal Ranger gets tuned closer to Explorer specs, while the Raptor gets a "high output" variant closer to Focus RS specs, to show some differentiation without significant powertrain changes.

Like KenLyns said, those are $90K in Canada! If I had $90K to get a coupe, it sure as hell wouldn't be a Lexus or an automatic...it would be an M2 or a GT350.
