What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I wanted a bigger truck, it came with the V8

 

This always makes me sad, possibly one of the most interesting build drivetrain and suspension wise and it's all never going to be finished. That started as a fully running and driving truck, too much at once for one person. Steps are important, an research is key, just saying over and over your going to "do" something to your truck does not make it so.

No kidding. I've always heard that toyota's are dependable, but I have, firsthand, learned just how resilient these little motors are. I have badly worn bearings from having gotten water into the crankcase (190k) (long story-even pulled all the rod caps to verify). The truck is getting ready to hit 250 k and I've had bottom end knock that becomes really apparent > 2000 rpm for the past ~60k miles (it is probably more than this as my odometer is off due to tire size). I've looked at different motors swaps, including the same motor, for about 2 years now. I am just waiting for this thing to give out. Mind you, I daily this thing and have driven those 60k miles in the past two years.

I am not complaining as I don't have the finances yet to undertake a successful 2jz, 1 kz, or ls swap or 5vz rebuild.

 

Some prerunners have 8.4 too with 4.56 gears.

 

Some had 4.7something too. 4.77?

 

Yea, I didn't have the money to buy the motor and the stuff on the tundra either. But when my friend rolled his truck and his insurance took care of it. I asked him for it and here we are today.

Well get yourself a prerunner rear end. Same width as a taco but with the tundra 8.4 that can handle the V8. I would offer mine but I’ve beat the fuck out of it and don’t know how bent it is.

 

I know, that's why I was saying he wouldn't need to get a new axle for the tundra V8. I think that's what we're talking about, right?

I’m late to the party. If he’s a DC prerunner then yes he would have the housing for the 8.4. I’m not to sure if non DC prerunners came with the 8.4

Or is the 8.4 and 8.0 the same bolt pattern on the housing? Never looked into it. I didn’t think so.
