Here's the thing I don't understand... in Socal we pay out the ass but its worth it because we just consider it "the sunshine tax", arguably the best climate on the entire planet.

The bay area is even MORE expensive than San Diego, and the weather fucking sucks!! Why the fuck would anyone pay for the "bay tax"?!? (unless you're a google engineer making $500k)

Very nice. I don't think I've been to Gastonia much but I really liked Charlotte. I think it's the perfect size honestly and you're very close to the Appalachian mountains. Super excited for you man, I can only imagine your face when you see how much property costs over there....

Oh I already know the cost of living haha. I went out for a visit in November and fell in love with the area. July can't come soon enough!

I have a lot to say about this. Sorry to derail this thread.

    In short:
I don't know how SoCal roads are, but here they are terrible. Potholes, cracks, glass and random shit on the roads. So a lot of the fees go towards that and air pollution mitigation. But perhaps the biggest explanation is the simplest. They charge because they can. The Bay Area is in super high demand, because of all the tech. They charge that high because people are willing to buy that high. Presents an interesting situation where blue collar workers are being priced out of the area. A city can't run on just software engineers.......

I lived most of my life in California but I had to move to Indiana 11 years, 5 months, and 4 days ago. I miss the warm winters and not humid summers. I probably pay twice as much for heating and cooling. I save a couple hundred on registration though.

meh...more like the 'too much sun, heat, not enough rain and never-ending wildfires and drought' climate. I don't think we even had a winter, not here in SoCal anyway

Our roads down here are actually pretty good but I don't think thats the result of good management its just it never rains and our weather is tepid, so the roads don't get so much wear and tear.

I was more alluding to just cost of living in general. People balk that a 2br condo in San Diego is $2k/month but that barely gets you a freaking parking spot in SF lol.

At least we can drive to the desert or mountains to use our trucks as intended on weekends or even on an afternoon after work, and we dont have to fluid film our cars and worry about ice and rust every year like those poor guys back east do. I’d much rather stay out west, because I like being able to drive around in the middle of January with the windows down. Being able to yell at other drivers out the window is much more fun than paying less for registration!:p

I don't know how other states work, but here in Kansas you pay your tag registration AND personal property tax at the same time. My last bill was $575 but I couldn't tell you how it's divided up. We don't have vehicle inspections and some of the nicest roads in the country.

    But.... it's Kansas
