Opened a can-o-worms......

Moved into our new (to us) house in August. Been doing a lot of things to make it ours. Finally was able to scrape off some of the ceiling texture that was hanging down. The drywall compound was coming off in SHEETS! Not a good sign at all. As I was looking, I'm noticing some considerable gaps between the sheet of drywall. Okay, lets take a look in the attic. The last owners didn't take some of their attic stuff. So that turned into a job in and of itself. Got all their crap down, cleaned up the attic a little and took a peak around. I found a lot of insulation over the garage was non-existent! Uh-Oh!! So it looks like I will be re-insulating my attic, laying down 3/4" plywood on top of that to give me some decking up there, finish scrapping ALL the texture, re-taping the and mudding. What a mess this is going to turn into.

 

maybe humidity had something to do with it as well...

 

Well seems like an opportune time for adjusting that ceiling height to accommodate that auto post lift you have always dreamed about

 

That's the only thing that I can think of and why it did this. Humidity both in the garage and in the attic attacking both sides of the ceiling.

 

Funny you should mention that.... I would love one. But not for this garage... I would love to get a detached garage that has designated spots for various projects...
i.e. wrenching bay. separate room for wood working. Separate room for man cave, pool table, bar, T.V. so on and so forth. But that is YEARS from now after a lot of worked overtime...

 

don't forget the insulated air compressor room to keep that big air compressor whisper volume silent!!!!

Check to see if they put a vapor barrier under the drywall. That could be your problem of why she peeled. Also prefill those wide joints with 5 or 20 minute mud first, or she will crack/peel at joints.

 

Spray popcorn is just a cheap way to make shoddy drywall work look good for a few years.

After you retape and mud you might want to just prime and paint it with a quality exterior paint.

Use your rework as a reason to add a few budget LED fixtures before you floor the attic. Instead of plywood 1x12 of MDF installed with drywall screws will make fitment easier and give ease of access in the future should you need it.

 

The garage door is not insulated but that is on the list of things to do for sure!

 

Sad thing is, that is not popcorn! That is actually ceiling texture that you would find in a living room! I will definitely be getting several LED fixtures. Those two bulbs do not cut it. MDF you say... I will have to look into that! I was going to use deck screws mainly because I like the torx bit a lot better than the Phillips heads. But whatever is less expensive, right? As long as they screw and hold... (I see a lot of "That's what she said" jokes coming from that.....
