They can say age all they want but when the ducks traded Andersen over Gibson they dropped the ball big time, hes is insane for the leafs

At the end of the day my point stands. That is NOT a matchup Tampa wants in the first round so they better play harder to try and keep 1st.

 

I'd rather have Gibson. Either way, I don't see 1 is significantly better than the other, so not sure how it was a fail no matter which guy they kept.

 

The Coyotes exploded for 6 goals!!! They should have saved one or two for the next game.
Better question is what happened to Chicago this year?

 

They traded Panarin and ruined a great thing (Panarin, Kane, Anisimov).

 

I'd argue Chicago was heading for their current fate a little earlier than that. In the end, you can't keep a team in Stanley Cup contender form for long in the salary cap era without a lot of luck in the draft. Chicago ran out of bottom nine talent. Players Chicago has drafted and who have filled in roles have been leaving Chicago when they are worth far more in the open market than what Chicago could pay. That catches up with most teams and it caught up to Chicago.

 

Not disagreeing but they had the best line in hockey (or at least one of) last year and they swapped out a key piece for Saad (which was basically a fairly even swap salary-wise). Toews line hasn't been good and after Hossa retiring, they gambled in an effort to solidify that line and lost badly. I'm convinced that a Kane, Panarin line could produce enough to carry that team to at least be in a better spot than it currently is.

 

I'm not convinced the NHL is a one line trick league at all anymore. The Edmonton Oilers are a perfect example of that. They can have one of the top scoring lines in the league yet be in the basement for points because you need to roll four lines if you're going to play an offense centered style of play.

Bottom line, as a team, Chicago just isn't anywhere near where they were even two years ago and I think we agree on that.

I think even had they not traded those guys, they wouldn't be an elite team. And ya Edmonton is a good example. I do think they are also a bit of a team that overachieved last year, but I still think you make a valid point. I still would not have done that trade, if I were Chicago. I even said that in this thread when it happened. It surely would not have elevated them much, but at least better than they are (at least I think so). But like you are saying, they don't have the depth anymore. Schmaltz is a bit of a bright spot but the Sharp reunion was less than impressive. Keith seems to be struggling a bit and the goaltending injuries don't help.

 

Andersen is having a Vezina type season right now. Gibson cannot stay healthy.
