    What year is your truck?

There are factory service manuals (FSM) we can send you in PDF format.

One thing that's very helpful, and somewhat customary, is to enter your truck's info into your profile so it shows up under your name after "vehicle:". It'll help you get help by members when you're asking a question because we can see what year, engine, transmission, 4x4 or 2x4, etc...

Assuming the engine hasn't been changed out, the easiest and most definitive way to figure out what engine it is would be to just call up your Toyota dealership with your vin and have them tell you what exact engine it is. Haha better then having us play detective.

I think I know what you mean. Earlier 4-cyl 1st gen models have engines with distributor and 4 high voltage wires going to each spark plug. The distributor was on the pass. side of the engine, like in my "Taliban Truck":

Newer models have 4 coil packs one on each spark plug so there is no high voltage wires, no distributor. Each coil pack is connected straight to ECU (of course low voltage). This is probably why the engine looks different.

Definitely not a 3vze, currently on a rebuild of one of those. That may have been answered already...

What he said that’s basically the main difference... if you need to do intake gaskets it’s changes a bit too but those very rarely go bad. What do you intend to do in a “tune up” valve clearances? Valve cover gasket? Or dobyou just mean oil change check brakes, and all fluilds? Anyway goodluck find the what have you done to your first gen today thread super helpful guys less trolling

Manuals like the chilton/ clymer can be a big help, but I agree they're confusing when they cover a wide range of vehicles. That looks like the 2.7 3rz-fe to me.

As someone else said, I'd go with the factory service manual (FSM). There are some links around here and other sites where you can get the full FSM. This site cannot host the FSM itself, since it is basically a pirated commercial product... But you can find it. You can get one at a dealer too, but they're rather expensive, like over $100, iirc.

Yes, you are describing what I'm pretty sure I have, there is a bar that goes across the top of all of the coil packs, not sure what to do to take it off, a video or manual with some photos would sure be helpful.

I think you are confusing the injectors and coil-packs. On the driver-side of the engine, that 'bar' is the pressurized fuel rail which goes over the tops of (and connects to) the fuel injectors.

The top of one of the coil-packs (#1) is clearly seen on top of the valve cover. Coil-pack #2 is barely visible behind that hose connecting the valve cover to the throttle body.

I wonder if the original motor was swapped with a motor not intended for the American market. (JDM?)

I think you're right I wondered if they might be injectors but where are the spark plugs? Did you see my photo? There are no wires coming out of the top of the motor.

I believe your truck has a 'Coil-On-Plug' (COP) type of ignition system.
This means instead of having 1 or 2 coils, providing the 14,000-volt sparks for the 4 spark plugs,
the truck has one coil for each spark plug. Each coil connect directly to the top of the spark plug,
therefore there are no 'fat' plug wires. You can see the top of the COP clearly on top of the
valve cover (I use the term 'coil-pack').

To get to plug #1, disconnect the COP from the harness, remove that little bolt,
and the COP should lift right up and off the plug, with a little resistance.
Then you'll be able to look down that hole, and see the plug.
You need a long extension to use along with the spark plug socket.

To get to the other 3 'COPs', you need to remove some intake parts to get at them.

^ this. V6 engine has 3 coil packs running 2 spark plugs each. So there is a high voltage wire going from a coil pack to spark plugs.

    5VZ–FE engine-ctl.jpg

I4 has 4 coil packs each placed on the top of the spark plug. So the high voltage wire from each coil goes straight down to the spark plug under it.

THANK YOU!, don't know why I couldn't see it before, but your explanation makes it very clear. I can do it now, should I replace the coils, or is there a way to test them? I have a multi meter but would need instructions on how to test them.

I can send you the FSM for the 01-02 but the folders are named with abbreviations. Kind of hard to navigate them all.

Maybe someone else has a better copy?

If not I'll send you what I have.

If you don't have any symptoms, and just want to do a basic tuneup, then
: new plugs, new PCV, new air filter, clean MAF sensor.

Are you having any symptoms, like poor idle, bad mileage, check engine light is on, etc ?

Don't replace coils ($$$) unless they are bad.
The Haynes manual may have a way to test them (need a multimeter).

I'll start a thread asking about the FSM, if I don't have any luck I'll get back to you.

The only thing I notice is the check engine light on, the code is P0300, I wanted to fix the things I can do before taking it to the shop, and it's probably time for a tuneup, it has about 18000 miles on it since I got it 12 years ago (yes, that's right, it's not used a lot)
