I had to get a hold of a case supervisor who was able to find it. What a nightmare.

Finally, some progress. And a middle finger to all those posts doubting the existence of a problem.

I have this noise as well. I have a three day old 2018 Off Road with manual transmission. Driving home my wife looked at me and asked what that noise is. I had no answer to give. Never heard anything like it. Didn’t hear it second day. Heard it today. It definitely can be heard at almost any gear and any speed. But I can get it to stop by slowing down or speeding up in that gear. I have not reported it because I wasn’t sure if it is just normal or not for a Toyota. This is the first Toyota I have owned. Not sure what to do or how to even report it. I don’t want anyone tearing my 3 day old truck apart. Definitely sounds bad.

Welcome to the club! If I could do this purchase over I would drive back to dealer, return it and demand my trade in back with full refund.

Woah they did a TSB? Did it actually fix the problem?

Take it back, hand them the keys and cancel the deal.

I dumped mine after diff replacements and the world's biggest run around by corporate. This tsb is the first acknowledgement that it isn't "normal" like they've been saying for years.

It's unclear, to me, if this even fixes it though.

That's nothing like this noise. This noise only occurs between ~50 and 60. Go enjoy your new truck and get off TW! :)

    Yes a TSB was issued.

The TSB was exactly what hiPSI predicted months ago...and it also verifies what I was told after I re-geared - namely, sometimes a noise is just a noise.

I know one person who had the TSB performed and says it worked. I'm going to see him this evening and take a listen for myself.

Now, that the howl has been addressed, we can all go back to reading threads about the lack of height adjustment on the seats.

But a noise must indicate some impending doom and destruction to my truck! It can’t just be a noise! My diy engineering manual says that Toyota clearly f’d up the whole rear end on purpose to screw us out of all our money and ruin their reputation! ;) I also argued on this thread and others that it was just a noise and it did not indicate something was going to blow up and ruin the truck. Got a GMC Sierra work truck 95k miles and it howls at certain speeds and has done so since new and I have had no issues. It’s a truck it makes noise.

Did you read the TSB? You understand that this is a goddamn resonance issue....right?

206 pages of people literally predicting that these rear ends were going to grenade and it ends up being a NVH problem. Gotta love TW.

Just wait. I predict in less than two pages some knucklehead will predict that this is a coverup by Toyota...that they are adding sound deadening material to cover up the impending grenading of these rear-ends.

This thread hasn't reached it's half life yet....trust me.

That is good news!! My truck doesn’t fall under the TSB unfortunately (2018 SR5) but my local Toyota shop manager is trying to get an update for me this Thursday.

That makes sense. It would be a bad idea to release a TSB for every 2016-2018 Tacoma at once. I bet dealer techs wouldn’t be too happy about that haha

Because I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night and my 5 minutes of Googling Diff Whine while drinking my coffee makes me a better troubleshooter than Toyota's Engineering and Mechanics Department. :angrygirl:
