the 1792 is pretty smooth. I have one in rotation at the moment. Was given one as a gift from my boss 2 years ago and I was impressed so I just grabbed another a few weeks ago.

Just a couple (my personal) thoughts on whiskey. Im a bourbon guy. I have learned to like and appreciate some old single malt scotch but when it comes down to it give me bourbon and some Canadian whiskeys. I think scotch is really an acquired taste. I’ve drank 180 or 190 proof moonshine but all I taste is the burn, in fact I don’t find any taste. Seems to me it’s just a great way to get drunk with little effort and not having to drink very much.
I personally like whiskey that ranges from 80 to 100 proof. For me the more over 100 proof the less definable the taste and the more difficult to identify the subtleties and taste complexities. In addition the more over 100 proof after a glass or 2 you reach the point where taste no longer matters , senses get a little foggy , taste and enjoyability be damned, you are just drinking to drink. Nothing wrong with that, I’ve done that many a time. But if I just want to enjoy the whiskey give me 101 proof or less.
Over my life time I’ve tried well over a hundred whiskeys. Some cheap some ranging several hundred dollars a bottle. Too many to remember them all and some just not memorable. My favorites may change every few months. Currently my 2 favorites are Buffalo Trace which I just recently discovered even though it’s been around for decades. That’s my go to beverage after a cold day in the marshes hunting waterfowl. My wife pours me a glass and has it waiting for me when I get home from a hunt. My other current favorite is a Canadian Whiskey called Forty Creek Barrel Select. I just love that whiskey, I can sip that all evening. Even though I subscribe to various spirit and wine publications, I go by what I like not what some hot shot whiskey taster may think. I use such reviews as a guide to point me in the direction of different spirits and wines.
These are just some of my personal thoughts. I’m sure many or most may disagree with my thoughts but that’s just the way it is and that’s a good thing.

Recently tried out their full proof. Begins very smooth and full, but has a slightly harsh afterburn... but hey, that's to be expected with the high ABV.

Will do! Got the rare chance of being alone in my office, so taking advantage of it.

Really want to try Eagles Rare and some higher end Maker's. Just need to make it to the store.

    Eagle rare is pretty good.

I like it with a little water. Takes the bitterness out and makes it almost sweet.

I usually use an ice cube as my water addition. Cool it down a little too.

Stopped by Total Wine today. Stocked up on Oregon and a few other faves.

Thought about going big for a birthday bottle. Then I had second thoughts...
Then I was like... ‘meh. Maybe Not’

And someone will buy those with a small portion of their tax cut, right.

Did you need to go through a metal detector to get that close?

Just a plain glass locked cabinet door between them and me. (Maybe it was alarmed, maybe it was more thick than regular glass? I didn’t test it, didn’t want to go to jail for stupid shit on my birthday.)

THAT'S $2200 A SHOT! And I thought the $5k spirits at the local liquor shop were insane! Daaaayyyyuuummm.

My absolute favorite - Jameson Rarest Vintage. I did a crap ton of mandatory overtime one February and picked up a bottle for myself when it was all over. That stuff is amazing. I've been nursing that bottle for 3 years.

One of the more interesting ones I picked up was from a distillery near me. All of their stuff is great, even the moonshine is incredibly smooth and drinkable. They opened in '88 doing moonshine and then started doing whiskey in '91. They kept the first barrel, and finally bottled it in 2017 to commemorate 25 years. Last summer was rough at work, and to cap it all we had our first kid, so I treated myself again and I got a bottle (expensive and they're only 375 mL too). I expected it to be supremely smooth with lots of subtle notes of this and that, and that wasn't it at all. It was surprisingly astringent at first, little musty, oaky, and very sweet - almost like port. It's smoothed out after being open for a few months, but it still tastes every bit like it's been in a hot barn in VA for 25 years. I like it :D

Trying a new one tonight. One I really enjoyed before was the Jameson 12 year but that shit is hard to find now.

Tax refunds hit the bank account! I've been wanting to try a rye so I figured now's the time. I did some research and narrowed it down to Angeles Envy rye or Whistlepig rye. Both are highly rated and I didn't know which I was going to get, but when I went to Total Wines they didn't have the AE, so WP it was!

The 15 year was just too spendy so I was looking at the single barrel 10 year. The regular bottle is 50% ABV 100 proof. Total Wines had a cask strength exclusive version with several proof options. I chose the 60ABV/121 proof one. Can't wait to try it out tonight!

    Also - did a little reading on the history of WP and rye. Found this interesting, you might too;
