Lane assist and collision mitigation on the 2018s

I just picked up a TRD Pro from the dealership a few weeks ago. The lane assist feature will certainly beep when you cross a line, but it doesn't seem to auto steer back to where it's supposed to be. My daughter has a 2018 Corolla and it will steer you back fairly readily. Has anyone else had issues with this on the 2018s? The collision mitigation I've not had it slam on brakes on me yet, but a couple of times it has started beeping and BRAKE shows up on the screen, though it was a false alarm (no one in front of me). It didn't brake automatically though, which is a blessing if a false alarm.

 

It will not steer you. Button on steering wheel will turn it off permanently. The precollision sensitivity can be turned down in the main menu.

 

The lane assist doesn't steer for you only warns you. Not the same as other implementations.

Tacoma has hydrolic steering, while Corolla has electronic one. Steering assist only works with electronic steering.

 

Yeah that sucks if the sales guy is telling people that. I think on my Mom's Rav4 it'll do it if you have the smart cruise control on, which I don't think Tacomas have (and thus won't do it).

The false alarm is an interesting one. Do you live where it's cold, and was the front sensor cleared of ice and stuff? I know my backup sensors panic when I don't get the snow or ice off (usually when I'm just moving cars around, I don't drive before cleaning off the truck lol).

 

The false alarm has only happened 4 times in 6 weeks. Twice today though. It was overcast about 50 degrees. Front sensor area is clean. If it persists, I'll have the dealer look at it, though I'm sure they will say they can't replicate..lol.

 

Just needs simple recal or sensitivity turned down

 

Oh I definitely keep it on. That's the only way I was able to sell it to my wife, that it keeps us all safe and that's the only reason I'm upgrading to the 2018 from my 2007 Tacoma (fingers crossed behind my back).

I guess I'm just concerned that if it alarms as a false alarm and doesn't brake, will it brake when there is actually something to brake for?

 

Eh 4 times in 6 weeks is too much IMO. Especially if it's a nice new truck. I agree keep it on, seems like it's already helped multiple other people, but definitely bring it to the dealer. Maybe they already know something and will be able to fix it right away.

 

Something interesting I noticed in a video of the "2019" Tacoma Pro from the Chicago Auto Show was that there was no button the lower right side of the wheel where the LA button should be. Did they relocate it? Did they use the wrong wheel? Did they modify a 2017 Pro with JBL and snorkel?

 

I've had the pre collision (default setting) do it on its own on the freeway shortly after I traded in the '12 OR, bumper to bumper traffic. Like the fool, I wasn't paying attention and looking down as the traffic started to move (15mph), when all of a sudden I heard the warning and the brake system took over. I remember being pushed forward and trying to look up through the steering wheel fighting the push forward. Pretty awesome. But now after that pucker, I'm paying more attention. That was too close and glad I had this safety feature.

 

Unfortunately, anyone who’s spent any time on TW will inevitably know more than the salesman they’re talking to. I found that to be true when I was looking to upgrade from my SR. I was asking to drive an OR, and a sport. He starts with, “well yeah, this one has the scoop.” Lol
I was like, “it’s ok Nick, I know what I’m looking at.”
I sold cars at a Honda dealership for about 6 years, and was embarrassed by the lack of knowledge on the part of my coworkers. They’d be like “um, can you show my customer how to do (whatever it was) with the Navi system?” Pathetic.
I was an enthusiast first, salesman second. I couldn’t spend time getting to know people, and then turn around and try to screw, or manipulate them. Finally quit that “career”

 

It isn't marketed as Lane Departure Assist on the Tacoma. It is Lane Departure Alert

 

Yep you're spot on. I should have just looked in my owner's manual instead.

 

I was in dynamic cruise control on the interstate doing 70mph when the big truck I was right behind decided to switch lanes suddenly. There was some doofus going 40mph in front of me and my truck immediately slowed down automatically to 40. Saved my bacon already and I just bought it.

 

So in reading the owner's manual, the pre-collision warning will come on if the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is HIGH. The pre-collision braking will occur if the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is EXTREMELY HIGH. Makes sense.

 

Every time I read about these fancy new safety features, it makes me think of:
