2004 Tacoma

Hello! I had a 2003 Tacoma as my first car...Now I am looking to buy a 2004 Tocoma. My question: how critical is the TRACTion control system? The one I looked at today does not have the TRACT. I am in Austin TX. It has a bit less than 10k miles. 3.4, V6, 2wd. Approaching 70mph, it has a bit of shaking. Any comments? Thanks

I assume you're talking about A TRAC? If I am not mistaken, A TRAC is only available on the TRD Off Road. It is supposed to help with traction when offroading.

What are the odds you left a 0 off that mileage?

How will you use the vehicle? If 2wd serves your purposes, then it should be fine. Make sure the frame is well inspected for rust. You don't know what a 14yo vehicles exposure might have been in the past. I don't mean stick your head under and look. I mean beat, probe and borescope thoroughly.

As with any used vehicle, if you don't get complete service records be prepared to spend some $$ to baseline all the PM items to insure your reliability. Doesn't matter if it's 10k or 100k, several things will deserve attention.

If you are a DIY'r it should only cost you materials. If you have a trusted independent mechanic, double that cost. If you are a dealer fan, 2.5-3x the DIY cost.

I am having an inspector take a look at today. What price will be good? Range?

 

Look at KBB and Edmunds. Based on condition, somewhere between private party and retail could be a good number.

You'll probably need to average the two, as they have a fair spread.

Everyone will tell you that the books are no good on Tacomas, that they sell for a lot more. Which may be true, but you're the buyer, not the seller. And no one here knows the lots position in the vehicle. For example, they usually have a 2-3k buffer to give you towards a trade so you think you're getting a great deal. If you can negotiate cash, you'll do better.

 

Ok timing belt needs to be replaced. That is the biggest issue. Plus other smal things, well I hope they r small, front tires, sparks plugs, two thousand?

 

If there are no records you should do all fluids. Oil, trans, diff, brake, coolant, power steering. While doing a timing belt it's practical to do all hoses, water pump, tstat and accessory belts. Basically anything touched going in and out that is a wear item.

Brakes, even if pads/shoes rotors/drums are in good order for a while, should be cleaned, lubed where appropriate and adjusted.

Assuming from my internet distance there is nothing else 'wrong', you'd then have a baselined vehicle. Meaning you have a grasp of it's full service status, and be able to drive with confidence any where you wanted to go.

Welcome aboard,if that timing belt goes it's going to take your whole engine with it.If you buy it get it changed immediately,had to have it changed on my sons Gen 1 at 170k.
