Here is a tip: TTORA site used to have FSM for some models on their site ( ), till they had to remove them for legal reasons. But once some stuff goes on the Internet, it will stay forever (this is a true warning for some young trolls). If you look way back into 2008 (http://archive.org/web/) you might find some stuff from the past :alien:

P0300 - Random/multiple misfire. I'll attach the diagnostic for this code. It's pretty involved.

If you have serious misfires, or your check engine light is flashing at any time, it's best not to drive the truck. Depending on your mileage, you may need coils pacs. All of mine went between 150-160K. It's not uncommon. It would fit with the age of your 2002 also.

If they turn out to be the problem, it's recommended to use Denso coils. They are the OEM part, and you can get them from places like Rockauto for around $100 each. Unfortunately, you need 4.

Ok, I haven't driven it much, the light did flash once when I came up the steep side of our driveway in second gear, haven't done that since, just used it a couple of times to move hay around the place. I'm getting the plugs today and I'll try to figure out how to check the coils. Mileage is about 120k. I have ordered from Rock Auto before, they're great. Thanks.

There you go. The proper response.

Some of the same kind of shit I'd see on TTORA... Only TTORA is worse...

Misfires can be worse when the engine is under a load, such as a hill, or when the rpms are high. The coil post can crack which allows the high energy spark to arc to the engine instead of the spark plug. Or the coil can just fail internally. They are firing thousands of times a minute, so age and mileage take a toll.

They are easy to remove. 10mm bolt. Just unplug and pull out. They can be changed in minutes, except for those under the intake ducting.

Let us know how it turns out.

It has around 120k, I took the coils out today, one is cracked, and another has a lot of "soot" (like inside a bad distributor cap), I'm taking them to a shop to have them tested in the morning, hope I don't have to replace them all.

Glad you found something suspiscous. I have a cracked one that is fixed up with dielectric grease and a winding of electrical tape around the post that I keep for my spare. It works fine, but I hope to never need it.

    Good luck with the testing.

BTW...you can see the name of it on the block. It is on the side of the power steering pump and you can see through the driver side wheel well at the bottom where the oil pan meets it will be cast "3RZ".

It won't be painted like this as it is all black, however, that is the location there.

Found out my local (in the next town anyway) Autozone can get the Denso coils for $59.95, less than anything I've seen online

That's a very good price. Never have seen them that low.

I believe its at the end of that fat hose in the middle of the last photo.
Remove the hose at the valve cover end.

Thanks I think you're right, but if I have to remove the whole valve cover to change it how badly does it need to be done? Here's a a photo with the hose off. Another question, the mechanic that checked the resistance on my coils showed me how, so when I got home I compared the old coils to the new ones, old read 2.00, new ones 2.26. So I have 2 of each, it's running great, is the discrepancy a problem?001 (Medium).jpg

This is different from my 95. In 95 the PCV is pushed into grommet. Looks like in the newer engines it is screwed into valve cover. Here is the picture from 2003 FSM

    pcv1.jpg

But yours looks different from both. Or maybe it is a push type.

Regarding coils, FSM does not specify the resistance of them. My guess is it depends on version (manufacturer year)

Does the top of the new PCV valve look like that? That just looks like a fitting.
What do you see if you remove the other end of the hose?

The top of the new valve looks about the same, maybe a little shorter. Just looks like a regular PCV valve. The other end of the hose is bigger, I can look at it tomorrow when it gets light.
