Are the 2018s still having Engine and Transmission Issues?

I see a TON of negative feedback on the 3rd gen on the forums and Facebook anybody know how the 2018s are doing in terms of quality?

 

Mines working fine so far. No complaint, but I only have 1,500 miles on it.

 

23k miles and I love my truck. Remember. Probably 5% or less Tacoma owners are on forums and social media...

 

^ what he said. On top of that, majority of those that post/review a product are usually the ones with issues. If it works as advertised, not many are gonna say it does. If it doesn't, every little thing will be reported.

 

Nobody tells you when things are fine. They only tell you when things suck.
Let me put social media and this forum into perspective:
Toyota sells about 17K Tacomas a month. We have a few hundred people here posting about this version of the Tacoma. Even if it were 1000 people, it is still a tiny fraction of owners.

 

With 1000 miles on my TRD SPORT, no transmission or other issues to report.

two years strong and 28k non problems. i also am averaging just under 22 mpg with shitty winter gas.

 

If you're thinking of buying one, you need to test drive the hell out of it (obviously) and make up your own mind. If there's something you don't like about the way it drives etc, don't brush that feeling to the back burner and be swooned by the looks of the truck or Toyota's past reputation. Also, as much as you're going to get concentrated negative comments on social media, you're also going to see some posters going out of their way to try and "debunk" the negativity - it's like their mission. As you may have guessed, there is a lot of bullshit involved on both sides. Again, make your own decision. Truth of the matter is, there ARE a lot of happy customers out there.

Having said all this, I like my Taco. Are there things about it that bother me? Yup (full disclosure - I drive an early production 3rd gen, so grain of salt required). Have there been issues that have warranted safety recalls and Technical Service Bulletins? Yup. Do all other manufacturers have recalls and TSBs? Yup.
Look it up, that part is not bullshit.

Still have mine. Still regret it. Still worst transmission ever designed in 30k plus vehicle.

 

Here’s my first hand experience on the truck. I had the opportunity to take a 2017 sport for 2 weeks from my dealer and ended it up driving it all the way to the most northern part of VT from Long Island, NY. The transmission was honestly terrible. On the highway it would shift to 6th at 40mph when merging then roughly downshift to 5th and 4th to pick up speed. I still bought an ‘18 because I knew there were aftermarket solutions to this problem.

I’ve had my truck now for about 4 weeks and have no complaints; whatever they did fixed the transmission. It won’t even go into 6th unless I’m going downhill with very low throttle input and is always in the right gear. Put it in ETC mode and it literally turns the truck into a beast as it rips around with ease on residential and tertiary roads. Only have 700 miles on the truck but for right now I’m very happy with the engine/transmission combo!

Yes the cps is fixed on the few from 2 years ago, they are filled with fluid correctly, and the whistle up front is fixed with 2 cent plugs.

No issues on my end of year 2017. I still drive a 2015 for my work truck, and I much prefer driving the 3rd gen. Just my experience, your results may vary.

Search "new truck problems" for relevance in 2nd gens.

 

Go drive a couple of 18s and see for yourself. What you think in how it drives might not be what others think.

Some people have a problem with that.

 

I have no isssues with mine beyond the crappy JBL system. 700 miles so far and the transmission seems to keep getting better as i put on the miles. I read all the stuff on here about low transmission fluids, loose rear suspension bolts and the like. Dealer checked tranny and diff fill levels and checked the tourque on the suspension as part of my PDI. Great truck so far... worth the wait for me.

 

Over 20,000 miles - no issues and I seriously enjoy this truck and highly recommend it. OP, you have been going back an forth for over a year between the Ridgeline and this truck. Drive both make your own desicion not silly social media's opinion. Easy one for me, been a perfect truck and coul;d not be happier. As my lovely wife says to me when I hem and haw, "shit or get off the pot."

 

2017 with 13,300 miles bought it one year ago yesterday and I have had zero issues. I’ve gotten 20mpg or better on all but one tank of gas.
