Surprised your TLDR was not "it's better than stock and good enough".

Quite frankly a Dana 60 is overkill for most rigs, and most people only get them for axle strength with tires much larger than you'll be running with a body on your truck.

I ran a 9" out of a '78 F-150 and it was great with 38" boggers. With less than a V8 powering less than 40" tires, any vehicle should be fine with a 9", especially a Tacoma.

No one's shitting on them lol. What I didn't add to my post saying a 9" is fine, is that I'm running Spicer's Ultimate Dana 60 (F/R) in my JKU because I couldn't pass up a fully dressed pair of axles with chromoly shafts, 5.38 gears, eaton e-lockers and heavy duty brakes for the price I got them at.

I think objectively the 60s are strong (like jberry said), but I don't think it matters for a taco. I'm running 40" tires on my JKU and wouldn't run anything lower in strength than a 60 for this setup. I still have the stock 3.6L, but am planning to either supercharge if the engine holds up or do a v8 swap if the engine starts to develop issues (it's at 100k miles). A V8 and 40s just didn't seem like a good combo for a well built D44.

Plus, they look sexy as fuck.

With what I was reading, I was seeing conflicting reports/beliefs on gear strength/longevity when comparing a HP 60 to a F9. Potential issues I came across were with the pinion deflection (supposedly Currie+dynatrac resolved this issue with their custom housings) and that the gears ride on the coast side. Seemed like a lot of the differences came to a wash at the end when putting it on a "does everything" vehicle, ultimately it came down to long term intentions for me and the 60.

Thankfully I was solo coming back from the airport. I invented a few new swear words too.

For the record I wasn’t shitting on a D60. It’s still fucking light years ahead of the shitty 8” Toyota. It really is a wash between the two aftermarket axles. Both the 9 and D60 are damn near perfect for a tacoma with the power we can put down, tire size, and weight. It really boils down to preference. I was just trying to show some of the differences between the two and point out specifically why I chose the 9 over the 60.

Yeah I was fucking around :).

I would be curious about the weight difference between the 2 though if you get the chance to weigh it, RJ60 housing+gears+locker weighed 193lb. Stock w/elocker is 113.5lb.

I will weight it! Not sure on your axle details, but i upgraded to 3.5" axle tubes and did a back brace too.

Agreed. The front diff doesn't need to "keep up". It's in 2WD the majority of the time with the rear end doing the majority of the work.
