Yeah I don’t use it as a punishment. When he gets in trouble he gets a little swat on the butt and a “no!” Then he stops.

When he goes in the crate it’s usually for a nap, bedtime or I have to leave to do something so he gets a treat and I spend 5-10 minutes sitting next to the crate until he’s calm and he gets his toys inside.

I have to recommend not to sit there to calm him. He needs to learn that on his own. Crate, treat, close and walk away. Their whining hurts and sucks, but you have to ignore it.

 

Our dog was a year when we got her, so no pup. She was crate trained, but we went through about 3 months of whining, biting the crate, and 9 months of her chewing blankets/pads. Stick with it, and treat only for good behavior. It has many benefits, that will last their lifetime. Good luck, as it can be challenging. It looks like he is pretty young yet, so hopefully he will catch on faster.
