I agree and stats aside, Ducks played most of the season w/o their top players. The Leafs while not saying they are the most stellar team defensively, are a better team. They have teams on their heels quite a bit because of their speed and offensive threat. The Ducks as a whole haven't been very good for a lot of the season and I think Gibson has probably been their best player.

Point being, it is not clear cut as to who is better which goes back to the original statement. It was not crazy to choose Gibson. They are pretty close in talent and Gibson was younger with more upside and potential. Pretty easy choice, not sure what was so crazy about it.

Funny this is the topic most contributors are hung up on when Phaneuf was just traded to the Kings lol.

    Also team USA sucks.

That trade was swapping 2 guys that are a shadow of their former selves, so it really meant nothing to me.

And USA can't get it right with a good talent pool (NHL players etc), so I wouldn't expect them to ice a good team in the current situation.

    I have to agree.

Especially since my contribution, which was argued for some reason, is that the media in Canada is suggesting Andersen will be a possible Vezina nomination. Given the media nominates the candidates, if they are saying possible it's possible no matter what a bunch of other people who don't get a vote think.

Anderson in the Vezina conversation? Depends on how long the conversation is because Vasilevsky, Hellebuyck, Rinne, and Rask have all been better, and I've even put Hutton and Fleury above Anderson although they haven't played nearly as much.

Vasilevsky will win the Vezina. Period. The only way he doesn't is if he drops like a rock in March.

Being nominated and winning are two totally different things. Again, the suggestion was that he's a possible. The SN and TSN crews have Andersen at number 4/5 in their ratings. He's a fringe guy but if he keeps up his current play they're hinting he could slip into the 3 spot.

You were the only one to bring the media in to things :notsure:

Based on his statistics, he's not having a vezina caliber season, which was the original claim. I have no doubt that Canadian media which is undoubtedly fair and shows no bias whatsoever is trying to talk about Anderson as a vezina candidate. Doesn't meant there's any chance it's gonna happen

    Andersen is Danish :notsure:

It's long been proven players in the East have an advantage in awards over players in the west due to vote distribution as well.

So, to paraphrase, you're saying when a bunch of voters say they are going to vote one way directly and not through some straw pole we should just ignore that?

Not me. Although he wasn't too bad as a 3rd or 4th defenceman, he was unfortunately getting paid as a number 1!

One has to appreciate the the Leafs get talked about a lot. Likely more than any other NHL team. It often feels like Canadian Media=Toronto Media. It' just the way it is. There are only so many topics and they will all be brought up at some point.

Bang on. If the Burke crew hadn't screwed up and signed him to 7 per during his best play ever on the Leafs, Phaneuf wouldn't be the pariah he is now.

Hell of a finish to the Jets/Caps game last night!
TSN brought up the possibility of Byfuglien being fined or suspended for the slash on Beagle, totally worth it as it saved an empty net goal, Jets score shorthanded with 14 seconds left and Buff in the box.

I'm saying regardlesss of what the media is saying, being 10th in save percentage and 21st in GAA is not vezina caliber. Which was the original claim. Not anything about who the media thinks will get nominated

    Yup.

It makes sense that the media will pander to the largest population group. There are just more Leafs fans in Canada than there are fans for any other specific team. The Habs also get their own channel with RDS so the only team with a fanbase to somewhat rival the Leafs doesn't even really overlap in the media with the Leafs.

There's no doubt that the 7 of 8 game run was possible because of Andersen. I've also watched a lot of games this year and, to be fair, except for one month this year Andersen is a top 5 goalie in this league right now. That, to me, puts him in the running for a nomination should he keep that rate of play up. If he gets streaky in March, like he tends to, that will be the end of that conversation.

He's 11th actually. Again, he put up a .870 in one month earlier this year. By the same arguement you made about media focus, voters tend to concentrate on the here and now not the start of the season.

That all being said in no way will Andersen win the Vezina. I'm not sure why you bring things back to that. My comment is that he is probably about 50/50 odds right now on making the nominations. Whether you like it or not media comments, who vote for the award, tend to agree. Maybe you should call up those folks and offer up your superior analytics skills.
