    DIY Fabricobbler.

SwollenGoat, I would merely suggest holding off on purchasing another truck until you get the gut feeling it is the right truck (whatever that may be).

Keep driving all the available options out there, do your Pros and Cons lists with each. Maybe something will present itself.

I think I remember reading that you want a manual and a long bed, but also want the double cab, correct?
Toyota doesn't make that an option for us so we have to compromise somewhere. If you could do the DCSB 6MT OR you would have most of what you wanted, only sacrificing a foot of bed space to do it. You plan possibly to tow a cargo trailer for your bikes anyways, so you won't really need the bed space for those.
Then there is also a bike carrier that goes on your hitch. See Maxx Powell's YouTube, and you'll see him hauling his bike on the back that way.

You are literally trolling. You say you are asking if it's worth the money. Anyone that says the Tacoma is worth the money you proceed to talk about how an F-150 is the same money and is more capable and larger. Of course a 1/2 ton is more capable and larger. A 3/4 ton is more capable and larger than a 1/2 ton. If you need a 1/2 ton why are you here? If you don't, why would you buy one?

We own 3rd gens. Most like their 3rd gens. We all have experience with our 3rd gens. If you own a 3rd gen and you post a complaint or a "wish" that it had something it does not, that's one thing. If you don't own one and you come here and complain about something you don't even have yet, then people get defensive.
    Good luck.

I agree with that. I see a number of non-3rd gen owners piping up about this and that. I'd say 1/2 the complaints posted are just regurgitated info and frankly, immaterial. If I had to buy another 3rd Gen--specifically a V6/auto, I would have zero ISSUES doing so. None of the "flaws" concern me.

Yeah, nothing out there is floating my boat. a DCSB won't work for me, need a ACLB. There are times I just take the truck and sleep in the bed. Why I am looking at the the F150 super cab 6.5' bed. The rear legroom of the Ford SC and the Tacoma DC is real close, so maybe that is where the DC idea came from.

Wouldn't do a hitch carrier, had a bike flip off it once because a tie-down broke. Sold it immediately afterwards and stayed with a trailer.

I dunno, have been looking a Corolla iM's and Rav4's too...since they get so much better mileage for a daily. Why I am questioning my sanity daily driving a truck, while I only need it on the weekends and camping trips. Be a Hell of a lot cheaper too. Can pick up a Corolla for $20K. That way I can stay with Toyotas. Buy a car for a daily and keep my beater for hauling the dirt bike/camping trips? Not overly thrilled about trying another brand...that whole what you get for the money Taco vs. F150 has got me thinking. just not seeing the value in a Tacoma anymore, even though I like the truck.

He was dealt one of the worse for the wear "lemon" trucks and didn't have a great dealer experience. I think if the leaky diff and the quirky auto tranny weren't so bad he woudn't have had a leg to stand on.

Every batch of trucks is gonna have a bad egg and he was/is a squeaky wheel about it.

It's not trashing but it is a stupid question.

Is it worth it over a half ton? For me, yes. My garage can't fit a full size. I routinely tow 2000lbs. My truck does it just as well as my dad's 2012 F-150 Ecoboost. As far as people concerned about size, spend 3 years driving a 1965 C-10 as your daily driver... the Tacoma feels like a Mini Cooper in comparison.

Things only sell if people find value in them. We owners find a tremendous amount of value in a vehicle we worked very hard to get. If you don't see the same value it's okay, but don't question our wisdom on something so incredibly subjective.

Walk into any Boston bar and ask "are the Patriots really that good?" Then try to explain to them why they shouldn't get defensive. Free country yes. But doesn't mean it's smart.

And since you took a dig at millennials, remember we understand that words can hurt even if you dont intend them to unlike some of you old farts.

I don't see it as complaining, comparing yes. I am comparing to the old ones and vs. a 1/2 ton. Maybe 3rd Gen owners don't like it when you compare???

Middle of last year, I had cash in hand to buy one...but I couldn't do it. I like the truck, but don't love it...couldn't bring myself to drop $35K on vehicle I feel only "ok" about. Perhaps the shine has worn off of Toyota for me. Not the fan boi I once was.

Well this thread is about "Sell me on a 3rd Gen"

    Not sold yet...

I self employed, so by nature I am bean counter. Looking for the best bang for my buck. Honestly not crazy about anything out there, feels like I turn my nose up at everything...maybe I am just too much a tight wad anymore. And that is the problem...not the truck itself. Just refuse to spend money on things as I have gotten older.

Man I dunno. Seemed like a good dude but he just hated his truck and its issues. And he made sure everyone knew it too. LOL Made for good theater at times.

Maybe he was a Ford employee.

He ruined most of the threads I read. I took a 6 month hiatus from this site when he was here. He literally jumped into every single thread posted. He spread lots of inaccurate info as well. Not all, but lots.

Toyota is going to be building over a quarter of a million Tacomas this year.

    I’m not complaining about mine.

It doesn’t have Hemi or Ecoboost power, but after a couple of thousand miles, mine is running smooth and shifting very well.

As the engine design has been around for a while in other vehicles, it’s probably going to be reliable.
If you want to feel some power, just put your foot into it. The 0-60 time is respectable.
And running it at higher rpm’s for a while when towing or traveling up mountains isn’t going to hurt it.
    That’s what it’s designed for!

ECT and S-mode if you like!

I used to daily a '76 F250...and drive a Chevy C70 and Mack Tri-axle for work, for yanking our earth moving equipment around. One of the reasons I started buy Toyota pickups, first one was an '85. It was nice to jump into that after driving the big stuff all day long. So get the desire to jump in something nimble, but the Tacoma isn't as nimble as the older stuff, drives like a 1/2 ton me.

Now mid-sizes are as big as my old F250, and makes wonder if it is worth it. Apparently a guy can't wonder about such things.

Couldn't find a picture of a F250 Highboy sitting on 35's compared to a 3rd Gen...best I could come up with. So here is a Chevy vs a Chevy.

    27750800_10156180260589630_5901392262817_17658398dc177787f0f5da91c346d6c34a515b83.jpg

Ya see that is the difference, I didn't see it as a dig...just saying millennials tend to be hyper sensitive, and wonder why they are so defensive. They know they are hyper sensitive, yet don't like hearing it...odd indeed. I know I am grumpy old man, and will agree with with full heartily when I am called out on it. Hell yeah I am grumpy, and proud of it!

Just weird...can't do a simple comparisons without people getting offended.

To the OP, the only post I've read. Don't bother getting this Taco. I've had a 2013 TRD Sport, 2015 TRD OR and a 2017 TRD OR. Can get into the reasons why so many, but will save that for another post.

The good about the new Taco: It rides great, it feels great, is fairly quiet and smooth. I like the truck. Plenty of options and electronic toys. However...

The bad: The motor and transmission sucks. I had the updates/TSBs done, helped a little. But it doesn't know what gear to be in. It doesn't make enough power down low to keep it from shifting all the damn time. People will say you just need to learn how to drive it, blah blah blah, but tell me when you're on a flat road doing 70mph with a headwind and the damn thing can't even maintain 5th gear and is driving in 4th gear, how is that your fault? It doesn't have any power down low, plain and simple. It shifts all the time, back and forth. If you don't mind driving at 3000+ RPMs on a flat road getting poor gas mileage, go for it. But my 2015 Taco would drive under the same conditions in 5th gear no problem. My 2017 4Runner will do the same, no problem. And I've averaged 21.3mpg in the 4Runner over 7500 miles so far so people don't bother arguing it is a gas hog when the 2017 Taco averaged less than 1mpg more.

The truck itself is great, but the engine is weak down low and they did a poor job with the transmission.

I'm definitely not a millennial. I have a 23 yo son and a 25 yo daughter and I am 55 yo. It seems to me you are helplessly stuck in the past, as almost all your posts are comparing modern vehicles to the old vehicles. Truthfully, they do not compare and to continue to wax nostalgic does not do anything for anyone. Those days are gone. Forever!
Again, I had a brand new 1984 4Runner. I also had a brand new 2016 4Runner. They only thing they had in common was their name. That's it! Same with Tacomas.

I truly don't care what you get, but to come here "comparing" the 3rd gen to a Ford or your 1st gen is strange, since you do not own either a new Ford or a 3rd gen Tacoma. You test drove one five times. Even with that, you still have no idea until you have lived with one day in and day out. Don't be a troll. Do something.
