hello all. When I bought my 2018 DCOR, I had the dealer install the matte black TRD wheels. These ones: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/17-inch-trd-wheels-matte-black.361245/

When I picked up the truck they told me these wheels were not compatible with TPMS, so I'd have to live with the light on all the time. I accepted it then, but seeing the warning light every time I drive, I have a hard time believing it. If these are TRD wheels, why wouldn't the Toyota TPMS work? Do any of you have these wheels, with the TPMS working?

    Thanks!

Do you have the original Offroad wheels with the TPMS still in them? or did the dealer keep them?

They gave me the wheels and said I needed to sell them, as they couldn't do a trade and just charge me the difference. So the originals are gone, probably with the TPMS, unless the dealership removed those and kept them...

Yep, sounds like they lied to you. I'm using the TPMS from my stock OR wheels in a set of the TRD Pro 4runner wheels without issue. I believe that there is a compatibility issue between the TPMS in steel wheels and alloys, but it should've been a direct swap between the OR wheels and your new set.

Wow... that's two strikes for these guys. They didn't install the locking nuts when they swapped the wheels, but I found them in the back seat compartment and decided to change them myself. I noticed that on all 4 wheels, the nut I decided to take off and replace was WAY TOO TIGHT. Especially for alloy wheels. I would guess they were around 150 ft-lbs. So I went into the dealership and told them to retorque all to spec. The mechanic came out and proudly told me they had retorqued to 100 ft-lbs. Wrong again. The correct torque is 83. They apologized again, said they were thinking about the Tundra which needs 100 ft-lbs (this is true), and did them all again to 83. If I had needed to change one of these and didn't have a serious breaker bar, I would have been f*****. I guess the only way to know for sure is do them all yourself with a torque wrench.

I used the TPMS from my stock sport rims into the TRD rims with no problems.
You just can’t use TPMS from steel rims onto them, they sit at a different angle. Your dealer fibbed to you. Go back and speak to the service manager and explain what happened and ask for four TPMS. Point out the idiot that didn’t know what he was talking about. If they refuse call Toyota customer care and open a case. It may take a bit of time and effort bitching.

Wow! Those guys are morons! You need to talk to the general manager and get that rectified.

I had my dealer swap my stock sensors into the very same black TRD wheels as yours without any issue. Dealer gave me back my stock wheels with the stock tires still mounted, but deflated with no valve stems showing, so that was proof they pulled them out for transfer. Sounds like they simply left the stock sensors in your stock wheels/tires if you received them with valve stems and inflated. Just go in and talk to them.

Thanks for all the replies! There seems to be consensus that they screwed up. I'll open dialogue with the general and service managers for sure.

I made same change and the TPMS was a straight swap from OR rims to 4Runner rims.

    “Dealer Installed”...lol

When will people will learn to never have a dealership do any kind of work on a car.

Yeah that is wrong...some have even put the steel wheel TPMS in them just had to flip upside down because of the angle and the tire guy has to be careful when changing.

It's not a Tacoma but it's a 2018 4runner and the dealer swapped them out an hour after I bought it and the tpms works great.

That is TOTAL BULLSHIT. I put on TRD WHEELS and new tires on my 17 OR the shop just move my TPMS to my TRD WHEELS and New TIRES and everything works just fine. Take your business else where.

Talked to the service manager. He confirmed they 'should' have been able to move the sensors. Sounds like it was just laziness on their part, as they didn't want to deflate the original tires to pull the sensors off the rims. We'll see what happens.
