It’s definitely more difficult than the instructions lead you to believe.

Since some time has passed- does everyone that's installed this still enjoy it/no issues?

Have been considering picking one up for awhile but was hoping there would be more options available eventually. Not particularly looking forward to the install of this one.

I second that, definitely makes rowing gears more enjoyable! Install isn't all that bad either takes about an hour if you're focused on it.

Did anyone happen to pay attention to the diameter of the shaft where it meets the ball [:D]?

I've been reading a concerningly large amount of posts with members with second gens reporting shafts breaking at this point.
URD claimed that it happened just as often with or without their short shift kit installed, so i'm wondering if Toyota made any change to this. I'm certainly very worried about the possibility of becoming stranded/stuck in gear while in a limited access location.

I also saw URD say that it only happened to an extremely limited about of people, but I must have seen at least 5-10 people on this forum alone with the same issue.

I pinged B&M on a full replacement shifter. They need more folks to call to show a demand though. I'm not fond of the URD design.

Haven't seen anyone with a third gen mention it, but also:
    a. I doubt that many people with third gens have this installed
    b. Those that have it haven't had it installed long. People were reporting failures after anywhere from 15 to 100k miles.

Fair enough, but lots of components fail after 100k. Nothing lasts forever. Install it if you want a better driving experience or play it safe and stay stock. I really enjoy mine and have had no issues. I think I remember gadget telling me the 3rd gen was built differently to address the issue the 2nd gens had but I don’t remember the specifics. I brought up the same issues you have to him and he convinced me it wasn’t an issue. Hope that helps and good luck sir.

What was your guys' solution to get to the front bolts? Cut the body or drill holes right above the bolts?

Overall, I would give my experience with this kit and this company a 7.5 out of 10.

The kit shifts great. Very solid. Throws are shorter, but it's hard to remember what it used to be like even right after installing. I still have the issue of reverse being hard to get into. It takes some force to move the shifter over. I've become accustomed to getting a "running start" at putting the shifter over into R.

The install was a real pain for me. I got everything torn apart and cut the body enough to bend the metal up so that I could access the screws. When I went to put the two pieces on that go inside the new extended ball joint (not sure of the exact names right now) I couldn't get the two pieces close enough together to slip the new part on. I ended up calling tech support and talked to "Gadget", who said that he has seen this issue with the 3rd gens before and some of the shifters ended up being slightly bigger when they where machined. He told me that I could ship it to him and he could put it together for me and ship it back. This included sending my entire shifter to URD to get fixed, leaving my truck inoperable until it returned. Since I didn't see another option, I sent the kit and paid for it to get there as soon as possible. I included a note in the box asking for a return call when my item was received so I would know when to expect it back (Gadget said he could fix it and ship it back in one day).

I got the delivery notification on a (I believe) Thursday. I waited until around 2 or 3 PM on Friday to give them a call since I hadn't received a call from them. Spoke to Gadget again... While I was talking to him he looked at his received packages and found my box. He then told me he would get it done first thing Monday morning and get it sent back. With my truck still in pieces, I was a little upset knowing that without my call, my package could have sat there for a good while. I didn't see a point in arguing since it wouldn't do any good, though. I received my shifter back the next week and finished the install.

All in all, I don't think that URD is really to blame for this. Yeah, they did drop the ball in my eyes. But my viewpoint was skewed because I couldn't use my truck. Luckily I have a work vehicle and didn't need it to get anywhere during the week and just used my wife's on the weekend. It was a little stressful sending such an important piece of the truck halfway across the country and not knowing what could happen to it along the way. Also, with the money I spent to ship the shifter back to them, I spent more than I wanted to even with getting the kit on sale (I don't remember what I paid to ship it).

If I could do it over again, I wouldn't. This upgrade was not worth all of the trouble and time without my truck that I went through to get a little bit shorter throws.

    Just my .02

Great feedback. I read your review in another thread I believe. That variance in the shifter and the clamp design is what concerns me. Hence why I'd prefer a new entire shifter base and handle assembly.

Like I said, call B&M and ask them to develop one for us. The more requests they get, the more likely they are to make a compelling alternative to the URD solution.

TRD made a full replacement short shifter for the 2nd gen. Would be nice if they made one for us too. I may be wrong, but I believe the lever was shorter as well on that one.

I pretty much had the exact same experience. Had to send my entire shifter lever to them to put it on and send it back. Vehicle was down for a week. My process was pretty quick though. They put it on and sent it back same day they received it. I'd say the customer service is pretty good. However, I was informed by gadget that this issue is like "1 out of 100". It seems to me based on this thread that almost every install is experiencing this problem.

In regards to the lever breakage, I've also seen a lot of people fix it by welding it. A preemptive weld on the third gens could avoid the potential breakage all together.

I don't think I've shared my experience with this until now. You may have read someone else with a similar experience. A little concerning that there's multiple instances just within the population of this forum.

Yeah, I can't knock their customer service. It was pretty spot on. Their product design or quality control might use a little tweaking, though.

A preemptive weld might be a good idea for piece of mind, if someone has the time and ability.
