Ok, this thread is my favorite, so I can't just let it go that easy. No posts since Monday, what's up, everybody watching the Olympics ? Come on let's see some more pics, I'll start.

 

Show off.... What a nice clean truck...!!

Mine was covered in brown salty ice for the last 3 weeks or so...today it went up to +2 deg C.... I turned on the outside hose and blasted that salty crap off of her..... Musta been about 100 lbs of icy slush left in the driveway.....

She is NOT clean, but at least I got most of that crap off of her.

"IF" that albino grounghog (Wiarton Willy) is right, my little "Punkin" will have to wait 5 more weeks before I can make her look like this again....

I had the same thing when I took my vinyl off. I just hit it with my porter cable polisher with some cut polish and it came right off

 

What is a good Cut Polish to use? Is it literally called "Cut Polish" ? I am not finding anything by that term...I see "Cut & Polish" however. Thank you. And the spots in question are literally "dull" where it looks like I removed the clear or there is residue left which I know it's not. As soon as I can get some decent pictures I will post them up. I am just afraid I will make matters worse learning how to fix this.

Cutting polishes (Meguairs 105/205, Menzerna FG400) require a dual action buffer and certain pads to use. Have you tried a cleaner wax first?

 

Thank you, and no, I haven't tried anything but Turtle Paste Wax in a can that is like 10 years old. The pad that comes with them literally disintegrated trying to remove it. When I was younger my toys were older so they required more work to make them look better. Back then I had the time for that kind of stuff. Now as I have gotten older I have less time to do those things.

They have this at Walmart in paste and liquid. I remember seeing it but again, was afraid to try it before talking to someone. I am not opposed to spending whatever it takes to make it right.



Should I also invest in a electric polisher?

I'd definitely start with just the cleaner wax before investing more money. I really don't think you damaged the clear coat. If you rubbed hard with a microfiber towel, that could have just marred the paint a little bit but that's easy to fix. Close up shots of the paint would definitely help.

 

I'm going to walk out to the truck in the parking garage here at work as soon as I get a break. It's dirty but I will just wipe it off with some windex and a paper towel.

 

What He said, but not the so called polishers that you put in your drill, way too fast! you will burn the clearcoat!

But seriously, all I have are slower cordless drills. I will however look around for the right tool should I need it.


Ok, these are the pics. I hope these help you all to help me better. It's hard to get a phone camera to focus up close on something shiny with a reflection of something else far away.






Not sure what that spot is (arrow) but up close it looks like it might be a chip that is rusting. Just odd. Anyway, you can clearly see how these are dull spots. They look like I left the adhesive residue on there but I know it's not. If I rub them with the rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid or goo gone and a towel, until it dries the spot are not visible. Once that evaporates though, and even after a coat of wax, they are visible again.

exactly the same thing for me. I used a porter cable 7424 random orbital polisher, with an orange foam cutting pad, with 3M machine polish. pretty expensive for your average joe, especially if you're just working on your own vehicle. then I went to a white pad with Menzerna final finish, then wax and sealed with Menzerna sealant

 

Thanks man! Yea, that tool is 120.00 alone. Ouch. Chemicals are likely another 50 or more. Damn. I'm hatin' myself even more now. The tool does get great reviews, I'm just not sure how often I'd use it. My time is often so limited. I could look at it as an investment I know but.......damn.

 

Don't feel so bad. On my other car forum the guys were posting up pics of the first aftermarket things they bought for their cars... I posted pics of $800+ of microfiber towels, waxes, polishes, pads, porter cable da, garage wall cabinets etc. Basically added $1k to the cost of my car.

 

I think mine was a different model then Lol..it's pretty old now, but I paid like $220, but it also came with two backing plates and 3 pads

 

Yea, I am going to check around for a used one. I might get lucky.
