I've been biking around the neighborhood the last few days, since spring has arrived. I don't even know how many Tacomas are around now, but quite a few. Even starting to see some 3rd gens.

But I also saw 2 Pro4 Nissans. Not bad. Doesn't matter to me if it 'looks' old style wise, just because something is 'new' cosmetically design doesn't mean it's better. It's just looks.

Wouldn't matter to me if it was more analog. That smells 'simple to maintain' to me. Not bad if the vehicle is a keeper. But you are a leaser? So not a keeper?

Are you going to lease or buy? If leasing, I doubt your residual will be anywhere near the Tacoma's.

If the driving experience is more important that the financial differences and techno gee whiz, get one. I had a '96 very basic that was a reliable gem. It was 'raw'; the kids called it the 'red rumbler'. But it was excellent for the purpose and price.

If it meets your needs, go for it.

Btw the negativity on this forum doesn't come from a guy like you who says "hey, I'm not sure I'm feeling it," but from guys that say "I hate these trucks, here's why, and everyone else should too..."

Yeah I mean i couldn't do the basic SV Frontier...it's a bit too basic for me. But when you compare the PRO4X to my SR5...Nissan's top of the line is about the same quality feel as my SR5 interior wise.

I will miss the Taco dash but definitely not the seats.

I had a loaded SL crewcab as a loaner a few years ago and that's what got me into my 3rd gen. I recently had another one for a couple days so I'm speaking from actually having driven them.

Anyway, that extra power you feel is due to aggressive throttle tip in, I don't think it's actually any quicker. Try it out, there's nothing extra past half throttle. If you try to find that extra power past half throttle (like you're in a hurry) you'll notice that the transmission hunts quite a bit too. But I have to admit, ANY transmission programming better in than 3rd gen.

I had an 07 long bed and it was solid as a rock. I was considering a Pro X but the deal breaker for me was i found my manual taco....if Not a pro would have been my choice.

Fair enough. Yeah it's nothing like that. I could drive my Taco for the rest of the lease but it's really one of those fundamental feel-related things. I am 75% happy in the Taco and 98% happy in the Nissan. That's a big gap for me.

That'd be a big gap for anybody. Imagine marrying somebody you're only 75% in love with.

Well for me I drive city a fair bit. The low end torque setup just speaks to me in the Nissan whereas the Tacoma is just...hello? Anyone home? Sometimes it's really annoying. But yeah I know the Tacoma has better high end torque but that's not as satisfying for me.

mostly true. the ones that don't make a stink about every little thing are the ones doing something about it, or being patient while fixes are in the works.

but it's also true that many buy vehicles for them to work from day one. especially with trucks. so i can understand both sides.

Yep. I'm not talking on the street, I'm talking about living in my neighborhood. Which is pretty large. About 750 SF homes, so 15-1,700 vehicles. Not counting the apartments at one of the entrances.

Most folks here (in the neighborhood) tend to use their trucks like I do. A second vehicle for the convenience of an occasional haul, fishing, small boats, etc. Most are Pre-runners or 5 lugs like mine.

What is interesting is I'm starting to see 16's on the buy here pay here lots. And not beat up ones, ones that look nice and have modest mileage. I do find that curious.

My neighbor had an Xterra Pro4x. It was a nice vehicle. Things started rattling and falling apart fairly quick.

I don’t think it had any advantages over Toyota products, except price. Which you “pay for” when you resell.

If it speaks to you, get it. I’ve never been impressed enough to pursue one.

I really like the pro-4x, co worker has a SV or SL and it’s a good truck. If they weren’t both out of my budget it would’ve been a tough choice between TRDOR MT and pro-4x MT.

Would you be comparing the pro 4x if you would have started with a Trd Offroad? Your not comparing apples to apples. When I was looking I didn't buy the Nissan because the local dealer wouldn't respond to the simple question. What is the out the door price? They wanted me to go through the hoops on an all cash sale. Some people have real issues with the dealers getting hard core warrenty work done. I had a 2001 pathfinder and that drivetrain was so much more responsive than my 2016 Tacoma. The Bronze pro 4X was one sharp looking truck but they didn't want to sell it.

Well the TRD OR has the same transmission as the SR5 so I don't see how it'd suddenly be way better to drive (for me).

It sounds like you like the 4X tons more. If the cost you'll eat is less than the enjoyment you'll gain out of getting in, driving, and looking back at your truck each trip, then do you.

I have an 87 nissan pu with 270k and NO major problems. Still on original clutch and drive it daily. Had an 03 Frontier SC and loved it but needed tranny and SC. Went looking at new frontier but like everyone says its a little dated and i wanted an update. They are good trucks. I'm lucky as I don't have tranny problems most are having after my tsb. Love the taco now with new suspension. Drive what makes you happy....

Congrats, I'd take a new Frontier over a turd gen any day. The 4.0 is a great engine, more powerful than the taco 4.0. no more electronic gimmicks. Just a real truck. You're gunna love getting back to utilitarian basics and away from car-like crap.
