Picked up this bad boy last Sunday - a 5-Lug 1998 Tacoma SR5 v6 5-Speed RWD... with 442,383 Miles for only $600! I believe 2000 was the last year Toyota put the 5VZ v6 in the 5-Lugs so this is a pretty rare model with the v6, bucket seats, power windows, cruise, etc. I was looking for a cheap bed to buy on Craigslist to turn into a trailer and I was about to pay a dude $600 for his double cab bed and bumper, when this popped up. Couldn't say no so I rented a trailer and called up my buddy and we went and picked it up! Now I have two 1998's...

Runs and drives just fine. Only issue is that it's absolutely disgusting and it has a clogged EGR valve. I'm going to be restoring it from the frame up - follow my new build thread for more.

I was going to chop it up and turn the bed into a trailer - but somehow now I'm restoring it. The interior is pretty rough.

I'm going to rebuild the engine and drivetrain and make it a fun little street tuck.

 

sounds like a lot of work for a 2wd beater but make it what you want, you can make some coin just doing your original project and make some $$ selling the rest off and having extra cash for other things....just a thought

 

I thought about that but this truck does have almost 500,000 miles - doubt there would be many buyers for the drivetrain at this point. There's not much to sell either - everything inside is pretty beat to hell.

This was a rare variation of the 5-lug so once it'll all restored I'm going to flip it.

And working on it is pretty fun - gives me something to practice body work and engine rebuilding on.

You're probably right value wise but now I have my heart set on fixing this thing up.

 

long tavel, full bed cage, spring under, triple by passes, v8, fiberglass everwhere!! don't forget the nav and helmet oxygen! YAAAAAAHHH!

 

Totally would've done an engine swap or turbo if our great state wasn't so strict on Emissions.

 

just moved here from hawaii, cali sucks esp tax wise........oh well. life has changes and you have to abide.....like the Dude.....
