So the symptom that really had my suspicious is after I stop. I put my foot on the gas and my revs increase but I do not proceed forward. Then I jerk and everything is hunky doory. I am not familiar enough with the auto, but to me that seems like an issue

I'm not overly familiar with the Tacoma/4Runner auto either, but my Land Cruiser does exactly what you described and it has done it as long as I've owned it and not gotten worse and never affected anything. I have checked my trans level and everything is fine, towed with it too. If I start from a light harder on the peddle it doesn't do it either. Just gotten used to it, Land Cruiser forum members think it is slow solenoids and that changing them is common maint at least for my trans. If you lock it in 1 with the shifter does it still do it?

Lock it in first? Haven't tried. Interesting.

That physically actuates the valve body and solenoids to first gear so it is a pretty good test to see if that's your issue. If I recall my trans doesn't do it when I keep it in first.

I kinda like the one in the cruiser, even if it is physically bigger and heavier than the engine/trans combo in my taco haha. My only gripe with the cruiser isn't really fair to it but the auto is boring in the dirt. Great daily and the trans feels solid as a tank for my purposes and shifts imperceptibly smooth.

Oh they act VERY goofy at low temps. I thought my flexplate was going out again because I would be at 4,000 RPM going 20-30 MPH - and it would never shift out of second or third gear.

Once I let it warm up it doesn't happen.

May want to check fluid level before you drive it up here, these autos have a hard enough time staying cool with extra weight, large tires, etc.

In case anyone is interested, I changed that front transfer case output seal and all is leak free now, that was a really easy job. Wish I hadn't put it off for so long, gonna do the rear one too in late march when I have things apart for kings install.

They are. The only thing I have to modify is the seal around the tail light. There's about a quarter inch gap that needs to be covered with some silicone or something. That's my project for today

I leased a third gen in December 2017. I am not liking it all. Thank god it is only a lease. But I am stuck with it for 2 years and 10 more months. That cannot come quick enough!!!!

Decided just this week that I'll be moving into a house with a yard and garage at the end of the month, Just in time for an OME lift install later in March/early April. Been stuck in a tiny bedroom with no workspace available, so it'll a great change.
