You meant same dealer group correct? The salesmen are at different locations? I was the internet manager at a high volume Mercedes store and encountered this daily. Do both locations have the same vehicle? If so, let them battle it out. If there is 1 vehicle that you want, the dealership that has it will prob not let it go (trade) because they already have a deal working on it.

We contacted 25 different dealerships via email and pitted them against each other. We refused to "come in" until we had an out the door price we liked. It worked out well for us and there is nothing morally wrong with that. I got a nice truck, that had what I wanted and nothing I didn't for a good price and only spent 20 minutes at a dealership.... and most of that was waiting.

I had 3 dealers bidding against each other with a dead line and a returnable deposit on 2 trucks. Ended up with a TRD OR for under 32.5k OTD.

damn! You guys are good at this. I love that so much! 25 dealerships! 20 minutes in person. Okay, now I'm inspired.

two things I didn't understand. what is "Pasha" and what is "dead line"

TRD OR for 32.5 is amazing. Too me so lucky.

this one, and it's just one- The dealer has a handful of locations on two islands. I don't even know where this one truck sits, and I don't even know if the two guys work at the same location or different. I'm just glad I was able to get email addresses for them thanks to you all. I'm not good on the phone. At this point, I'm just waiting to see which one comes through. Oh, and the truck has the P and T packages (wanted a moonroof) and tow package. Only thing missing maybe is a Tonneau and I would like to get that one (i'm new to this) is it Bak, the company, has this CS tounne that has a rack with it? Oh, 36 OTD is what I know so far with reg and tax and fees. Our tax is 4.25. Better than a lot of places. shipping is 450 island to island. I'm hoping it doesn't have leather seats cause leather molds in Hawaii. You should see the black leather jacket in my closet. It's white.

I bought my 2017 via email in January 2018. I looked at every dealership that I was willing to drive to and made a list. I emailed each dealer and inquired about the truck about the out the door price. Some immediately responded, some did not. I removed these from the list. Many responded and wanted to "talk". I responded that I was looking at a few and was not ready to talk. When I had it narrowed down I started asking about final price. I went back and forth between the final two until I was somewhat satisfied. I basically told each that I was looking at each dealer's truck and that I was more interested in the other truck at the competitor.

The funny thing is that the truck I ended up with was the first one I removed from my list. When I inquired about the OTD cash price they responded with the exact price that was quoted on the web. I immediately responded and told them I would pass and please no further email correspondence. About 15 minutes later the general sales manager contacted me via email and said, "he did not know where the previous email came from but that was not their price..." He quoted me a price and I was interested. We chatted via email a couple of times and I told him I would come see him. A two hour drive later I pulled in and met with him. Nice guy, not pushy at all. Tried to hook me up with some bar fly that was the "internet sales" person. She was bad pushy. I had not even seen the truck and she states for us to complete the paper work. I told her let's see the truck first and then we would discuss price. I finally had to tell this arm licker I was not interested unless I could speak with the guy I spoke with over the web. She didn't like this at all and said ok. I headed back to my car to leave and she went inside. The general sales manager that I originally spoke with flew out the door to catch me. Long story short we negotiated and then I brought up that I was not satisfied with the "lady" and he knocked additional money off as he knew I was ready to bolt. Was there about 2 hours and headed home with the Taco. Except for the sack chaser, the transaction was good once I got her out of the picture.

Bottom line, make it on your terms not theirs. Be willing to drive and be willing to walk. Plenty of trucks out there. Use what you can to your advantage.

OMG! That's a story. arm licker? sack chaser?

I'm really glad to hear how guy did this and through email. You guys are damn good at this.

I can't drive to all these dealers though. My options are limited. I'm out in the middle of the pacific. Maybe later, I'll be able to afford a little boat to pull behind the Taquito. Okay, maybe my 2002 is a Taquito. 2017? Taco for sure.

Is this sacrilegious to say on here?

That first generation was better looking if one is looking for a "small" truck. I think these Third generation are nice looking for sure.... just not.... compact.

    oh, I'm wandering.

anyone recommend a cover to put over the truck to protect it? one that doesn't take forever? I don't have a garage. sad huh?

I also did my deal via email, and very little phone. I dealt with 11 different dealers, but unlike your situation, none of them were under the same ownership. You're basically relying upon the dealers not having a good CRM system, having poor interco communication, and/or having incentive to "beat" their sister dealership.

In the end, I would say there's nothing really "wrong" with what you're doing, but it won't likely work out as well for you as if you were able to deal with 2 different dealerships. Good luck!

Yeah, your right on that account. Might just piss them off and make things harder. Sure not gonna get anyone saying to me "this price is a gift from me to you". more like- take it or leave it.

We pay a premium in Hawaii.... for everything.

What was your out the door price including TT&L? What’s the tax in NH on vehicles? I know theres no sales tax on other stuff but are vehicles taxed? I’m not sure?

Couldn’t have been 32.5 OTD... even with the MT Savings over the auto.. if no tax on veh’s In NH then maybe it’s possible...

We don't pay sales tax, but get dinged hard on registration. I just registered my ~1 year old tacoma last week, and it was just shy of $700 for the year (I have special plates that add I think $90 or so). that annual registration decreases a little bit each year until it reaches a specific age then it's constant (I think this is how it works).

Pasha is one of the major shipping lines between the mainland and the islands. They operate Ro-Ro (Roll on - Roll off) ships that are dedicated vehicle carriers, among others. Here s their website: https://www.pashahawaii.com/

The other major shipper between the mainland and the islands is Matson: https://www.matson.com/

In my experience it was absolutely necessary to pit as many dealerships against each other and also doing it over email gives you a written record of it as well. When I started the hunt for a Pro, the best I would get were the stupid hyperbole statements of "well, they're pretty rare so you gotta pay to play", "toyota instructs us to mark these up $2k", "this might be the last allocation we get" and it goes on and on and on.

Granted, if I were smart I would have went the TRD OR route and had all sorts of leverage due to the available inventory of the 4 local dealerships. Either way, I pressed on with the pro and I found that negotiations get really easy when they see a price breakdown from another sales manager, what was once a firm line or a dealership "policy" now turns into "let me check.... yeah we can do that" real quick. Due to higher demand than supply I was only able to get 750 off sticker for a Pro but that wouldn't of been possible without pitting dealerships against each other.

Haha yep. I was around 900 because I was XX amount of months before my birthday and had to pay for those too.

Here's my exact steps I took. 3rd tacoma so I've had seat time with toyota sales.

Step 1, had my insurance company do a search for a new vehicle utilizing the member services. Got me to that first number that was 2k under list/advertised? The less expensive of the two.

After that I called a buddy who recently bought a tacoma to get his salesman at a location I'd never go to. Told him what I had for a price, asked for him to best it. He came a couple hundred under.

I took that number and called a dealer I know does do smoking deals. Found a truck for s good price, put a deposit on it to sit and think about it. It wasn't in their inventory but the other dealership owed them. I then went to 2 other dealerships and told them the other truck was showing up Sunday, 2 day before the end of the month.

3 way bidding war and 1 day later I came at that price in my home town. Just kept asking the simple question of if you can beat that or add anything in. Eventually the other two couldn't beat it.
