“Front wheel bearing swap is 45 minutes per side” they said......
3.5 hours later, one side is done.....:annoyed:

Projects never seem to go smoothly for me. I think my CB needs to be replaced. Thinking I’ll just order a 1-piece from Tom Woods.....

I don't understand how a 1 piece would work without modify your pinion angle?

I'll be doing a wheel bearing and carrier bearing on my truck this weekend too. If I've got time, my LCA uniballs too.

Unrelated, I'm on the hunt for a 4.30 elocker 3rd member and a 3rd gen front diff equipped with 4.30 ratio also. I think I've found the easy way to change gears without spending $$$. Hoping I can find both for around $1200 or so.

As long as both angles are (close to) identical but opposite on both ends it’ll work (both outputs must be parallel), which is how Tacoma’s come stock even with the CB. It wouldn’t work if there say the pinion pointed at the tcase because there would be an angle at one end but not on the other. That would be the set up for a double cardan.

97+ elockers are the same. The Limited T4R came factory with 4.30 ratio and will bolt right into a 2nd gen off-road housing. The 3rd gen tacomas still use the 8" High pinion that the 2nd gen uses. They changed the rear axles on the 3rd gens so no interchanging there. The 1st gen off-road tacomas came with 4.10 ratio, which I'm contemplating also. The 4cyl 2nd gen tacoma AFAIK also uses a 8"HP and was available with 4.10 ratio. Still need to confirm the 4cyl assembly will be a direct swap. With the 2nd gen having a carrier break at 3.73/3.91, gear swaps jump in price significantly as you need to purchase the 3.91 housing to put lower gears in it. Not possible with the 3.73 front clamshell as there isn't enough room for the ring gear on lower gear sets to fit in there and also the deck height difference.

Yeah, I doubt I'll ever DD on 35's, just outings here and there, so 4.10/4.30 would be in the ideal range. 4.56 is a bit low if I'm going to be on 33's the majority of the time, from what I've read posted by others.

No tacomas have a HP 8"... only Toyota's to have that were the 80 series I think.

The front diff on the 2nd gen tacomas is a 8" HP. At least for v6. Same with 4thgen+ t4r and fj cruiser.

This is probably not the right place to ask this question but you guys are smart.

My buddy has a 2005 GMC 2500HD regular cab long bed. He's got a 4wheel camper on it, the big 8foot Grandby. He's turning it into the ultimate overlander, but right now its stock height with 265s.

He can't find a lift kit that works for his truck. 4 wheel parts was installing a 6" procomp Knuckle lift but on page 7 it says "will not work on regular cabs" because the drive shaft is too short and will cause serious vibrations due to the extreme angle. He really wants to avoid a drop bracket lift, but there aren't a lot of options.

Any one know anything about these trucks and the suspension. It's got IFS with a solid axle in the back much like our trucks. How do people lift these regular cab long beds?

Thought I would give it shot.

Doesn't say poop about not working on a regular cab. Have some deaver springs custom made and maybe find better shocks but it comes with bilsteins so that's a good start.

Yeah my idea was for him to build it piece by piece. Get a custom leaf pack, longer shocks, then boost up the front springs and upper control arms. Just seems like the GMC lifts are all drop bracket, mall crawler lifts.

Things are just so much simpler on a Toyota.
