So I want to add a subwoofer...

I tried this first...but it was DOA. Luckily Amazon's return policy is easy and understanding. Decided to have it done right and glad I did. Pics attached. You can see the minor trimming done and the slight contact with the grille and the seat back. For a all-in-one powered 10" solution this thing pounds and sounds clean at the same time.

This fits behind the drivers rear seat in the double cab. It comes with all of the wiring and tapped the rear driver side speaker for the amp input. This has a high level turn on, so no remote or RCA cables are needed. Sound quality is decent and added bass is also decent. Do not expect to get a hard hitting sound from this, but it really fills out the lower bass on my Tacoma. I do not have it completely wired/tucked away yet, but it is functional. I will try to update with pictures later on.

One major thing I loved about this was the ease of wiring, not having to cut into any stock plastic, and the price.

For the price and ease of installation, it's hardly a bad product. Since it's only an 8" subwoofer it doesn't hit low, but it does a good job filling in what you need it to fill in. I will say that I found myself EQ'ing it a lot when I first installed it with the stock stereo, since I was finding either I had too much bass / distortion at some points or too little and I couldn't tell it was truly there.

It is not a replacement for a standalone 10" or 12" subwoofer, but it does help the low end. That being said, I think I'm starting to show my age. My first car had basic co-axials with (2) 10" subwoofers. My STi had (2) amps, components, subwoofer, etc and my Vette came with a full custom Boston Acoustic setup. While it's nice to have that thump for day to day driving it isn't bad. It's certainly not bad enough to give up all the storage space behind the seat for subwoofers.

 

I finally got around to snapping a quick picture of what the small 10 inch powered sub looks like. No cuts on anything whatsoever and wires tucked under/behind panels.

 

Totally Agree. JL audios are great subs. I have all the components from the premium audio build posted here (kickers all around and the Subaru tweeters) and then ordered a Jl Audio Powered 8 inch sub. Yes 8 inch. It is great, I would not hesitate to purchase any of these speakers again. The JL SUB provides a clean clear punch. Would not mind the 10 tho, but if your on the fence the 8 does plentty and still rocks my double cab.

 

Oh agree...the 10" is more than enough, but even in my late 30s I like acting like a dumb teen once in a while. Rattling the mirrors is quite fun

The 8" powered sub was nearly the same size and almost the same cost, so the decision for the 10" was a no brainer.

I've also upgraded to the Subaru tweeters and Infinity Reference 2way in the front doors. Didn't bother with the back doors.

 

How does it sound?

 

Added a 5 channel alpine amp with compRT 8 inch shallow sub. Subaru tweeter upgrade and kicker front speakers. More than happy with sound. Great bass

 

It sounds better than what I expected out of a $120 piece of audio equipment. I have had JL systems in two previous cars/SUVs and really loved those systems, but did not feel like dropping $600 plus to put better low end sound in the truck. Since I am 27 now, I don't feel the need to feel in lieu of hear the lower frequencies as much either. When you get it tuned correctly, it sounds pretty darn nice. Rockville has a pretty good warranty also as well as great customer service line if you need to call them on missing parts or troubleshooting. This took me a total of 45 minutes to install, so that also was a plus!

 

I wouldn’t have a clue where to start adding a 5 channel amp... is it pretty hard?

 

Did you install with existing wiring in a JBL replacement? I really want to just upgrade the JBL Sub... Since the passenger rear space is already lost, its a one for one swap.. I don't want to take up the drive rear side as i may still have other plans for that later..

 

I don't have the JBL system. It makes upgrading much more difficult

 

You can easily upgrade just the sub in the jbl system.

To piggyback onto this discussion, a close friend of mine has a 2017 Tacoma Sport that came with a Subwoofer. I have a 2017 Tacoma Off-Road that did not. We would like to switch. He wants more room and I want more sound. How difficult would it be to swap? Would my current Entune (premium package but not JBL which came with 2018 Tacomas) support the subwoofer? Need to run cabling?
